Iraq inquiry: Former UN inspector Blix says war illegal

The UN's former chief weapons inspector Hans Blix has said it is his
"firm view" that the Iraq war was illegal.

Dr Blix told the Iraq inquiry the UK had sought to go down the "UN
route" to deal with Saddam Hussein but failed.

Ex-Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, who advised the war was lawful on
the basis of existing UN resolutions, "wriggled about" in his
arguments, he suggested.

Dr Blix said his team of inspectors had visited 500 sites but found no
evidence of weapons of mass destruction.

As head of the UN's Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission
(UNMOVIC) between 1999 and 2003, Dr Blix was a key figure in the
run-up to the March 2003 invasion as he sought to determine the extent
of Saddam's weapons programme.

'No smoking gun'

Asked about the inspections he oversaw between November 2002 and 18
March 2003 - when his team was forced to pull out of Iraq on the eve
of the war - he said he was "looking for smoking guns" but did not
find any.
While his team discovered prohibited items such as missiles beyond the
permitted range, missile engines and a stash of undeclared documents,
he said these were "fragments" and not "very important" in the bigger
picture.

"We carried out about six inspections per day over a long period of time.

"All in all, we carried out about 700 inspections at different 500
sites and, in no case, did we find any weapons of mass destruction."

Although Iraq failed to comply with some of its disarmament
obligations, he added it "was very hard for them to declare any
weapons when they did not have any".

UN declares clean water a 'fundamental human right'

Many people around the world have little or no access to clean drinking water The UN has declared that access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right.

A non-binding resolution was passed with 122 nations in favour, none against and 41 abstentions.

Abstaining countries said the resolution could undermine a process in the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva to build a consensus on water rights.

According to the UN, about 1.5m children under five die each year from water and sanitation-related diseases.

The text of the resolution said that 884m people have no access to safe drinking water and more than 2.6bn lack access to basic sanitation.

It "declares the right to safe and clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right that is essential for the full enjoyment of the right to life".

It urges the international community to "scale up efforts to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable water and sanitation for all".

Canada, the US, the UK, Australia and Botswana were among the countries which abstained from voting.

China, Russia, Germany, France, Spain and Brazil were among those supporting the resolution.

Portuguese lawyer Catarina de Albuquerque is due to report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva next year on countries' obligations related to water and sanitation.

US delegate John Sammis said the resolution "falls far short of enjoying the unanimous support of member states and may even undermine the work underway in Geneva".

Some countries said the resolution did not clearly define the scope of the new human right and the obligations it entailed, says the BBC's Barbara Plett, at the UN in New York.

The movement of American factory jobs and white-collar work to other countries is part of a positive transformation that will enrich the U.S. economy over time, even if it causes short-term pain and dislocation, the Bush administration said yesterday.

The embrace of foreign �outsourcing,� an accelerating trend that has contributed to U.S. job losses in recent years and has become an issue in the 2004 elections, is contained in the president�s annual report to Congress on the U.S. economy.

�Outsourcing is just a new way of doing international trade,� said N. Gregory Mankiw, chairman of Bush�s Council of Economic Advisors, which prepared the report. �More things are tradable than were tradable in the past. And that�s a good thing.�

The report, which predicts the nation will reverse a three-year employment slide by creating 2.6 million jobs in 2004, is part of an effort by the administration to highlight signs that the recovery is picking up speed. Bush�s economic stewardship has become a central issue in the presidential campaign.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana � The US Coast Guard dispatched emergency teams Tuesday after a boat crashed into an oil well off the coast of New Orleans, reportedly sending crude spewing some 20 feet into the air.

The wellhead, located about 65 miles (104 kilometers) south of New Orleans, was ruptured when it was struck by a dredge barge being pulled by a tug.

The Coast Guard said it could not immediately confirm reports that a giant fountain of oil was now spewing from the damaged wellhead, which was situated only six feet (1.8 meters) below the surface of the sea.

A strike Coast Guard team from Mobile, Alabama had been dispatched by boat to the scene as well as a helicopter from New Orleans with a marine pollution investigator on board.

President Obama �is a very good chess player. . . . He says, �I don�t want to carry the historic blame of having orchestrated the defeat of America, their humiliation in Afghanistan,� � said Gul, 74, adding that the plot incorporates a troop surge that Obama knows will fail. �It doesn�t sell to a professional man like me.�

'As bizarre as it sounds, laws restricting property owners from "diverting" water that falls on their own homes and land have been on the books for quite some time in many Western states. Only recently, as droughts and renewed interest in water conservation methods have become more common, have individuals and business owners started butting heads with law enforcement over the practice of collecting rainwater for personal use.

Bright objects float away from space station

The spacewalk Tuesday was meant to replace a video camera and update cable connections to a module of the International Space Station.

However, the question every space buff wanted an answer to is: "What was that I just saw floating away?"

Two objects drifted away during astronauts Fyodor Yurchikhin and Mikhail Kornienko's six-hour assignment.

When the first one swam by, even NASA was befuddled as to what it was.

"Meanwhile here on the ground in Houston, flight controllers have been taking a look at the object seen floating away earlier in the spacewalk around 12:44 a.m. Central time," said the voice on the live NASA feed of the spacewalk.

"Still working to identify exactly what that object was, but they were able to determine that it does seem to have floated below the space station and it should not pose any sort of a problem for the space station as far as posing a debris threat."

Later, NASA spokesman Rob Navias said the object may have been a clamp used to attach cables, and it might have been left outside during a previous spacewalk.

An hour or so after the first fly-by, a small round object made its way into the darkness of space.

"Team here moving the cameras to follow another object that seems to have floated away," the NASA voice said this time. "A small round object that you can see in the middle of the screen here... Possibly a washer or something similar."

Navias said officials will do a photographic analysis to figure out what it was.

But, he said, "It's not unusual at all to have one or two objects float away during the course of a six-and-a-half hour procedure outside an orbiting space station."

The astronauts replaced a video camera that will monitor the docking of future Automated Transfer Vehicles, or supply ships.

They will then attach cables connecting the rest of the station to the Russian Rassvet research module.

�Top Secret America�: The Rest Of The Story

The Monday, July 19, 2010, edition of The Washington Post featured an investigative report entitled �Top Secret America,� with the subtitle, �A hidden world, growing beyond control.� The report begins, �The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work.

�These are some of the findings of a two-year investigation by The Washington Post that discovered what amounts to an alternative geography of the United States, a Top Secret America hidden from public view and lacking in thorough oversight. After nine years of unprecedented spending and growth, the result is that the system put in place to keep the United States safe is so massive that its effectiveness is impossible to determine.

�The investigation�s other findings include:

*Some 1,271 government organizations and 1,931 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in about 10,000 locations across the United States.

*An estimated 854,000 people, nearly 1.5 times as many people as live in Washington, D.C., hold top-secret security clearances.

*In Washington and the surrounding area, 33 building complexes for top-secret intelligence work are under construction or have been built since September 2001. Together they occupy the equivalent of almost three Pentagons or 22 U.S. Capitol buildings�about 17 million square feet of space.

*Many security and intelligence agencies do the same work, creating redundancy and waste. For example, 51 federal organizations and military commands, operating in 15 U.S. cities, track the flow of money to and from terrorist networks.

*Analysts who make sense of documents and conversations obtained by foreign and domestic spying share their judgment by publishing 50,000 intelligence reports each year�a volume so large that many are routinely ignored.�

On the surface, the Post report appears to be a valiant effort by a major mainstream newspaper (second in influence to only the New York Times) to expose widespread government abuse and chicanery. But don�t get too excited yet.

In Joel Skousen�s World Affairs Brief (July 23, 2010), Skousen writes, �The [Post] series has just enough tantalizing information to sell a lot of papers, but almost nothing that exposes the illicit side of US operations�a large portion of which is involved in recruiting, training, and running covert agents�only a small portion of which are spying on real enemies. A lot of spying targets our allies and patriotic Americans who the government worries could someday provide a source of rebellion against the growing totalitarian state.�

Skousen further charges that there is a �dark side� to �each agency of [federal] law enforcement.� This �dark side� involves �a lot of compartmentalization, front activities, hidden budgets and false stories in order to keep honest government employees and agents from knowing what�s going on behind their backs.�

Skousen continues: �What few do get a glimpse into government�s dark side are warned off with threats, some subtle and some lethal�threats which send a chilling message to others to not �ask too many questions.�� Skousen then quotes the Post report as saying that since 9/11, the NSA (National Security Agency) has grown to where it now consumes �1.7 billion pieces of intercepted communications every 24 hours: emails, bulletin board postings, instant messages, IP addresses, phone numbers, telephone calls and cellular conversations.�

Concerning all those government organizations and private companies working on counterterrorism projects that the Post report refers to, Skousen writes, �Once again, the series tells us nothing about the substance of what they do, much of which is unsavory and illegal.�

Skousen goes on to say, �What [the Post report] won�t tell you is that almost a third of these [NSA] operations are dedicated to black operations against Americans and other Western governments who need to be surveilled in order to control them and keep them from resisting the agenda of the New World Order. Much expense is allocated to spying on the unsavory private behavior of Congressmen, and even State officials�building compromising dossiers on people who influence the political process so they can be coerced into compliance when necessary.�

Skousen also chides the Post report for failing �to show how connected certain companies are to the mercenary contractor explosion that is growing into a force that will eventually be used to threaten individual liberties at home. The Powers That Be don�t need to hire foreign armies to clamp down on American dissidents. They are training hundreds of thousands of mercenary Americans to do it and using foreign wars to sort out who is ruthless enough or unprincipled enough to take orders without questions�similar to the way the Nazis sorted and selected those who would form the Brownshirt and SS brigades.�

In short, while claiming to expose the federal government�s �hidden world,� the Post report actually does little to uncover the illegal and dark activities that Washington employs against the US citizenry, and by so doing serves more to cover up this sinister activity. Even so, do you not find it more than a little interesting just how few media sources did anything to pick up the Post report? Did you read any of this in your local paper? Did you see anything of this on CNN or Fox News? Come on, folks! You are aware that most of the media outlets (including network television) in this country obtain the vast majority of their �news� from The New York Times and The Washington Post, are you not? So, how convenient is it that this report (such as it is) was virtually ignored?

As I�ve said in speaking engagements�both large and small�all over America, We have more to fear from Washington, D.C., than from Tehran or Baghdad, or from any other foreign entity. America�s founders understood this and tried to warn the American people accordingly. For example, Daniel Webster warned, �There is no nation on earth powerful enough to accomplish our overthrow. Our destruction, should it come at all, will be from another quarter. From the inattention of the people to the concerns of their government, from their carelessness and negligence. I must confess that I do apprehend some danger. I fear that they may place too implicit a confidence in their public servants and fail properly to scrutinize their conduct; that in this way they may be made the dupes of designing men and become the instruments of their own undoing.�

The protection of the people from the totalitarian tendencies of their own central government in Washington, D.C., is why the framers of the Constitution included the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment was never about duck hunting or target shooting; it was all about the American citizenry being prepared to defend itself against its own federal government. The founders� distrust of the central government is why they attempted to divide the power and authority of government into three separate branches. They expected the three branches to compete against each other and to hold each other in check and balance against governmental abuse. And this is also why the individual states each maintained their own sovereignty and independence when creating the central government in 1787, because, at the end of the day, it is going to be the states that form the final fortress for freedom.

For all intents and purposes, the three branches of the federal government have done nothing to prevent the massive expansion of unconstitutional governance by Washington, D.C. The passage of the Seventeenth Amendment was the beginning of the end, as far as separated power was concerned. Neither has it made much difference which political party was in power in DC. The unlawful expansion of federal power has continued under both. This means that there are only two remaining protections against absolute federal tyranny: 1) strong, independent, and defiant State governments, and, 2) a determined and fully armed citizenry.

The Washington Post report (for all its failures) should serve to remind the American people of just how vulnerable we are (and have always been) to totalitarian government, how fragile liberty and freedom are, and how necessary it is that we remain eternally vigilant to resist the machinations of power-mad Machiavellians in Washington, D.C.

Quantum physicists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe it is possible to create a time machine which could affect the past without creating a "grandfather paradox"

Scientists have for some years been able to 'teleport' quantum states from one place to another. Now Seth Lloyd and his MIT team say that, using the same principles and a further strange quantum effect known as 'postselection', it should be possible to do the same backwards in time. Lloyd told the Technology Review: "It is possible for particles (and, in principle, people) to tunnel from the future to the past.".....

Another Recession Due Circa 2012: Jim Rogers

A new recession would be due around 2012 but central banks will not be able to throw cash at it anymore, Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings, told CNBC Tuesday.

India�s central bank raised its interest rate Tuesday, joining other monetary authorities such as the Canadian and Norwegian central banks in hiking rates to stem inflation.

�We do have inflation in the world� most central banks should resign,� Rogers said.

There has always been a recession every four to six years in the US �since the beginning of time,� and that would mean another one is due around 2012, according to Rogers, a hedge fund pioneer who started the Quantum Fund with George Soros in 1970.
