Shells are able to purify water from heavy metals like cadmium, zinc, lead and iron. Austrian scientists that made known Monday. The discovery that the lives of millions of people in coastal areas in developing countries can survive.
The team of scientists, led by Stephan Kohler of the Technical University of Graz, did research in factories on the banks of the Saigon River in Vietnam. The researchers flooded grinding mussel and oyster shells with highly contaminated water and found that the shells of the metals in the short to the water extracted. Shells consist of aragonite, a mineral that is found to be for its calcium atoms' to exchange for heavy metals. The metals are trapped by this process in a solid material and are harmless for the environment.
Like many developing countries, Vietnam has a serious lack of clean water. As modern refineries are too expensive, millions of Vietnamese are still dependent on polluted drinking water.
