More Military Charter Flights to Land in SJ

KCBS - More Military Charter Flights to Land in SJ.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KCBS) - Over the next several weeks, residents who live under the Mineta San Jose International flight path may see an unusual amount of military charter activity.

The airport has a curfew between 11:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. on takeoffs and landings, but that doesn’t apply to military aircraft.

As for why the airport is seeing an increase in military flights, the reason is literally up in the air. “We don’t know the answer to that. That’s something for the military to explain, but it’s probably related to troop movements of one kind or another. We’ve seen in the past that sometimes there’s an increase in military operations and charters because of training exercises or deployments, but we don’t have the precise reason here,” explained airport spokesman Dave Vossbrink.

The reason why neighboring Moffett Field isn’t be used is because the charters use commercial aircraft. “If you’re looking at the aircraft, it would say Northwest or Delta or Continental or whatever the commercial carrier’s logo is on there, and so they are chartered, commercially chartered, and the passengers happen to be military troops.

According to Vossbrink, the airport has asked the military to try to minimize late night and early morning departures.
