Ex-President Bush honors girls at golf event in Rye | SeacoastOnline.com.

RYE — Former President George H.W. Bush served as honorary chairman to the Wal-Mart Pebble Beach First Tee Open Girls Participant Selection Qualifier at the Wentworth by the Sea Country Club.

Thirty-nine girls ages 14 to 18 were involved in the qualifying event, many of whom traveled across the country to tee off on the New Hampshire seaside links. It could be said that is nerve-wracking enough for the girls in the First Tee qualifier to have friends and family watch their every move on the course, but having a former president casually eating a sandwich along the green accompanied by his wife, Barbara Bush, a Secret Service detail and local golf professionals can bring the experience to a new level.

Charlie Seefried of Portsmouth is on the board of directors for the N.H. chapter of the international First Tee nonprofit. Seefried said the nonprofit learned the Bushes were attending the event only the night before.

“This is an incredible way to showcase New Hampshire to these young girls,” Seefried said. “This is an event that the girls are always going to remember.”

Sara Jane Hughes of San Antonio, Texas, and Kristina Morley of Pleasant Hill, Calif., met Bush after putting at the 15th hole. The 18-year-olds said the president is the first famous person they have met.

“I didn’t know what to say, but he seemed really nice,” Morley said.
