74 percent more children on ADHD drugs

Between 2004 and 2007 the number of children and adolescents who swallowed ADHD drugs rose by 74 percent. The number of children taking drugs to psychosis increases.

The total number of children and young people for whom at least one package was used, production of 43,919 in 2004 to 59,884 in 2007. Half of all children to be younger than 12. Especially the group that ADHD medicines prescribed will grow from 6007 patients in 2004 to 23,251 in 2007 (+ 74%). The anti-psychosis are in the elevator: + 12 percent.

Not excessive
With 23,000 children who receive medication, medication for ADHD are still not overly prescribed. This is the French association TDA / H Belgique said in a response to the earlier message. According to TDA / H Belgique would be better also with the causes and consequences of the disorder involved than merely focusing on the medication.

The association points out that the medication is no cure. "She changes the personality of the child, but improves his self-control, his attention, his perseverance, (...) elements that are essential to school and society to function."

Hyperactivity
According to the Association in Belgium from 3 to 5 percent of children in school an attention disorder with hyperactivity. These are between 52,000 and 91,000 patients. A large part of their ADHD is not detected. (belga / mvl / adv)
