A sad day for the world today, but what exactly is the reaction they are trying to get out of the world?
Putin has signed into law on June 30 (1) the "gay propaganda" bill, banning gay pride marches and the possibility of being sent to prison for talking to a child about gay issues or that gay people even exist. He has described "gay propaganda" as pornography.
The law is broad and vague, so that any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not evil, any parents who tell their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who makes pro-gay statements deemed accessible to someone underage is now subject to arrest and fines.
(2) Another law that could send gay (or "pro-gay") tourists visiting Russia to prison, including touring musicians, artists or athletes (Russia is to host the Winter Olympics this year).
(3) Banning the adoption of Russian-born children to same sex couples or single parent of a country where marriage equality exists.
Finally, it is rumored that Mr. Putin is about to sign an edict that would remove children from their own families if the parents are either gay or lesbian or suspected of being gay or lesbian. The police would have the authority to remove children from adoptive homes as well as from their own biological parents.
