Large group arrested at climate summit

Monday, December 14, 2009

Sunday, December 13, the Danish police again a large group of demonstrators arrested. During a lawful demonstration of Climate Justice Action (CJA) fell a total of 257 detainees, including dozens of Dutch. Shortly after the departure of unknown origin, the protesters suddenly surrounded by the Danish police. The demonstration was headed for the port of Copenhagen to protest against the role of shipping in the climate crisis. The action of the police seems to be an exact repetition of the arrests the day before. The Danish police seem to want all the stops to make climate activists to discourage participation in demonstrations.

At the demonstration last Saturday - which drew more than 100,000 people - were 968 people with no direct aanleding arrested and put down in poor conditions in cages. This group consisted of a mixed company with, among other Hare Krishna's, Attac activists, and members of various environmental organizations. For those arrested were several Dutch. Many detainees have not sat for hours chained to a toilet to be allowed. Several people became ill from the cold and fatigue. In one case, within the cages that were used as cells with pepper spray sprayed into the demonstrators. As a result, got arrested and several policemen were unwell and vomiting. Several people have announced the police to complain.

Activists are worried about what questions Wednesday to happen. On that day a demonstration under the title "Reclaim Power" to the conference center draw. Together delegations from the conference will go out and demonstrators take somewhere in the middle. At this point in the middle two groups want a "Peoples Summit" keep talking about an alternative to the apparent solutions are discussed. Possibly some government delegations also participate in this action. The action is mainly an initiative of the Climate Justice groups from developing countries.

CJA is a broad global coalition of social movements and action groups from around the world who believe that the climate does not contribute to a just solution to the climate crisis. Peter Polder: "What is discussed in there, does not save the climate. It's only appearance on solutions where companies can earn lot of money. Governments seek a compromise on an ecosystem. We will have to accept that infinite economic growth on a finite planet is impossible. "

December 16, 2009

COPENHAGEN – Gloom has started turning to doom here at a climate change summit where failure is becoming the expectation and breakthrough would be the surprise outcome.

At a grand opening ceremony, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Britain’s Prince Charles and Danish Prime Minister Lars Rokke Rasmussen warned countries that compromise must pave their path if a climate agreement is to be signed by Friday.

Connie Hedegaard, the former Danish climate minister, resigned the conference presidency to allow Rasmussen to take the reins of the meeting as world leaders began arriving. Hedegaard was to continue overseeing closed-door negotiations.
