    Loneliness is contagious?

    Loneliness is contagious?

    Tuesday, December 1, 2009

CHICAGO - The feeling of loneliness can feel like a cold virus spread about groups of people. Or so say researchers from the University of Chicago, the University of California-San Diego and Harvard.

Lonely people share their feelings with their friends and acquaintances. These then spend less time with people who are lonely and are thus themselves becoming lonelier.

Others feel attracted by its nature less lonely people. People who are lonely, so come up in a downward spiral. This makes it increasingly difficult to end this situation.

“How is freedom measured, in individuals as in nations? By the resistance which has to be overcome, by the effort it costs to stay aloft. One would have to seek the highest type of free man where the greatest resistance is constantly being overcome: five steps from tyranny, near the threshold of the danger of servitude.”

    Re: Loneliness is contagious?

Loneliness is the human condition. No matter how many friends and lovers you are surrounded with, you come into this world alone and you go out alone. In a way, all our social networks we build are illusory attempts to stave off the consciousness of our essential aloneness. As a great philosopher once said, “Consciousness is a wound.”
