Beach disappears?

BEACH-GOERS had to be fast on their feet yesterday after the ground disappeared from under them at Inskip Point, near Rainbow Beach.

The sand started slipping just after 10am, according to Hervey Bay man Ron Morgan, who could only watch in shock as a small hole turned into a gaping chasm 30 metres wide and kept on growing.

“The beach is just falling, it's disappearing into a giant hole,” he told the Chronicle yesterday.

“You can't see the bottom. It's like a deep crevasse, and it is growing all the time.”

By mid-afternoon, Mr Morgan estimated the hole to be about 100 metres across, and about six metres deep.

“It's all the way up to the tree line and I just saw two trees fall in,” he said.

“The whole beach is disappearing.”

Mr Morgan said he thought the erosion might be because the fresh-water table was so full from recent rain that a spring had bubbled up through the sand, causing the beach to collapse.

“But I don't know for sure, all I know is I've never seen anything like it.”

That is surely odd. There seems to be alot of things going on with sinkholes nowadays, either that or we never paid attention to them too much before. I'm glad those people made it out of there o.k. That will certainly be an experience to tell the kids and one day grandkids for many of those beach goers one day. Thanks for sharing.

That IS strange. Makes you wonder, that's for sure.

We just had a whole house collapse and all most swallowed up in the mid section of Florida,(sink hole) the woman who owned it wasn't at home at the time 79 year old lady, I feel sorry for her, (poor thing, I don't know what insurance does for that unless its under the act of God thing, the hole was as big as a two car garage!

Thank god she wasn't home. Sure, she lost her house, but she's alive!

That's a big hole. Wow!

You would hope that it would be covered by insurance, but you know insurance companies, they'll weasel their way out of having to pay for anything.

Yes, I know. You can't trust the insurance people anymore than you can bankers.

It kinda makes you wonder if this has something to do with all that underground drilling we keep hearing so much about.

Good thought, and what about the groaning and rumbling sound I've heard about too, Somethings going on behind our backs as usual.

There are many thoughts on the grumbling as to it being drilling for some underground bases I believe some are thinking. Until we know for sure, it is all just theory.

They would now have you believe that the grumbling would be from the US Navy.

What's really the truth? That information has not been provided to me, so I can't answer that. But I am in the midst of some of these sounds, they have not stopped and have been happening for a couple of years now.

If they are drilling, and the ground is too soft, I could see the sinkholes and the beach disappearing being linked.

I'm sure eventually we'll find out. I would think it would HAVE to come to light sooner or later.

Hopefully, but can you trust the way these people will spin it? It'll probably be all our fault in the long run.
