Girl, two, dies after sea rescue
A two-year-old girl has died after she and a baby boy fell into the sea off the Kent coast, police have confirmed.
The toddler was airlifted to a London hospital in a critical condition after being rescued by members of the public.
The Dover Coastguard was called to Warren Apron, near Folkestone, just before 1500 GMT after reports that a pushchair had tumbled into the water.
The eight-month-old boy is in a stable condition at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent Police said.
A Coastguard spokesman said the Dover RNLI lifeboat had been launched but the two children were rescued by members of the public.
The toddler had been unconscious when pulled from the sea.
A member of Dover's volunteer lifeboat crew Jon Miell was walking his dog in the area at the time and, having heard shouts for help, rushed to the water's edge to give first aid.
He called emergency services and administered heart massage to the young girl until the air ambulance arrived to take her to hospital.
A Kent Police spokeswoman said despite efforts to save her there, she died on Sunday evening.
A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the two adults, a man and a woman, were unhurt but had been taken to the Ashford hospital as a precaution.
"They were cold and wet and obviously shaken up," she said.
