Islamic Republic of Iran has objected to the controversial official logo (on left) of the coming London 2012 Olympics, which resembles the word ‘Zion’.
According to an Iranian official, the logo, with its blocky, abstract rendering of “2012,” is racist because it appears to spell the word “Zion,” a biblical term for Jerusalem, rather than 2012. Bahram Afsharzadeh, the secretary-general of Iran’s National Olympic Committee, reportedly, had sent a letter of complaint to International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge.
The jagged, multi-coloured logo, which reportedly cost 400,000 pounds, features four bold numerals representing 2012, with the signature Olympic Rings emblazoned within the digit zero.
London 2012 Olympic Committee head and a former British MP Baron Sebastian Coe unveiled the logo in June 2007 to an immediate barrage of public criticism that it was hideous and a waste of money.
Bahram Afsharzadeh said Iran may decide to boycott the games – and has asked other Muslim countries to boycott the event if no action is taked by the organizers.
