On March 14, 2011 – the screening at the United Nations of the movie Miral, directed by Julian Schnabel, has been denounced by Israel’s delegation to the United Nations, the American Jewish Committee (AJC), the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), and other Jewish organizations as an effort to portray Israel as the villain in its dealings with the Arab world.
The movie Miral (means ‘stand-up straight’ in Arabic) is based on the novel by the same name, written by a Palestinian journalist by the name Rula Jebreal.
Jullian Schnable (an American Jew) in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, said: “I love the state of Israel. I believe in it, and my film is about preserving it, not hurting it. … But if we don’t listen to the other side, we can never have peace.”
In the movie, Mumbai-born Catholic actress and model Freida Pinto, plays an orphaned Palestinian teacher (picture on top left) in Jewish occupied Jerusalem refugee camp. Maybe, Jullian Schnable, was affraid that if he cast a young Palestinian girl in the lead role – Jewish Lobby would get his bank account frozen for aiding anti-Israel ‘terrorist groups’ as happened to several Muslim charities.
“I saw the film as a cry for peace,” Freida said at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. “It will have a special appeal to the younger generation. Peace is the way, Gandhi said, and Rula Jabreal (who looked into her own life for writing the novel) reiterates that idea”.
Miral is a French, Italian and Israeli production. It also has an Indian producer Tabrez Noorani, who has served as a line producer for many English language films made in India including Eat Pray Love and Slumdog Millionaire . This is Freida’s third film after Slumdog Millionaire and You Will Meet a Tall Dark Man .
