Last week, the Israel-Firster at the Capitol Hill demanded Obama administration to stop funding the United Nations Refugee and Works Agency (UNRWA) because it provides textbooks to Palestinian children which contains “explosively anti-Semitic, anti-American and anti-Israel” texts. Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J) co-chairman of Bi-Partisan Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism, told his guests from Jerusalem-based Center for Near-East Policy Research that as donor to UNRWA, US lawmakers are responsible for the contents of the textbooks.
The UNRWA was established in 1950 in response to hundreds of thousands of the native Muslim and Christian Palestinians were turned into refugees in their own land by the Jewish terrorist groups after the West’s creation of Israel. The UNRWA oversees the health, education, and social services of some 5 million registered Palestinian refugees, including those in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The UNRWA receives 98% of its funding from voluntary contributions and several donor states and private agencies including the US, EU, Sweden, UK, Norway, Netherlands, Iran, Turkey, etc. Its projected budget for 2010 and 2011 was $1.2 billion of which it received $978 million. The UNRWA provides support to Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza.
In 2010, Canada’s Israel-Firster Stephen Harper government announced cancellation of its $20 million contribution to the UNRWA citing the lame excuse that the agency had made it “dificult” to monitor how Canadian contribution were used. Interestingly, the US did not see how its $217 million were being used. However, Washington do play other dirty tricks connected to its donations. While Washington gives its full $3-6 billion annual aid to Israel before the end of January each year – sometimes it has released its funds to the UNRWA by the end of the fiscal year.
The Congress knowledge of the so-called ‘Jew-hatred’ in school textbooks in Muslim countries comes from Dr. Arnon Groiss, a Zionist Jew who is assisstant Arabic director at Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA). He sees Jews and Christians being hanged with trees in every Muslim country even those which are lead by Christians like Indonesia, Nigeria, Iraq, etc. sometimes. Arnon headed the Congressional Research Service (CRS) study which is being used as ‘bible’ by the anti-Muslim lawmakers on human rights violations against Jewish and Christian minorities in the Muslim world.
Professor Daniel Bar-Tal of Tel Aviv University, after studying 124 elementary, middle- and high school textbooks on grammar and Hebrew literature, history, geography and citizenship and came to the following conclusion:
“The early textbooks tended to describe acts of Arabs as hostile, deviant, cruel, immoral, unfair, with the intention to hurt Jews and to annihilate the State of Israel. Within this frame of reference, Arabs were delegitimized by the use of such labels as ‘robbers,’ ‘bloodthirsty,’ and ‘killers,’” said Professor Bar-Tal, adding that there has been little positive revision in the curriculum over the years.
