Tunisia’s only Jewish Senator Joseph Roger Bismuth is not happy with the the ouster of Tunisian dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, 18 months ago. Bismuth, is the president of 2000-strong remaining Jewish community in Tunisia. He doesn’t feel comfortable with the rise of pro-USrael ‘Islamist’ Ennahda Movement.
“You cannot find a better government than what we had (Ben Ali),” says Bismuth. Bismuth also extended his praise to all the ministers of Ben Ali’s political party, the Constitutional Democratic Rally, calling them “good technocrats,” but he said that the dictator and his family had “ruined the country” through fraud and mismanagement.
On December 7, 2011, Israel’s Tunisian-born deputy prime minister Silvan Shalom made another call on the small Tunisian Jewish community to immigrate to Israel.
In response, Jacob Lelouche, who runs a kosher restaurant and was an independent candidate in October 2011 national elections, told BBC reporter Wyre Davies on December 31: “Where would I go – to Europe? Come on, I’m not stupid. To Israel? I’m not that stupid either. Silvan can say whatever he wants. I am Tunisian, this is my country. I will stay here. Silvan can not tell me where to live.”
