Both Iran and Malaysia held international Qur’an competitions within the last three weeks ahead of the arrival of Islamic month of Ramazan (the month of fasting), begining on July 21, subject to sighting of Moon.
Kuala Lumpur concluded its 54th international Qur’an competition on July 13, 2012. Muhammad Anvar Bin Ghazali (Malaysia) won the top prize ($13,000) and Amin Pouya (Iran) won the second position ($10,000). Tehran’s 29th international competitions in Holy Qur’an recitation and memorization were held at Tehran’s Milad Tower between June 17-22, 2012. Some 50 reciters and 40 memorizers of Holy Qur’an from about 70 countries participated in the competition.
The participants’ performance was judged by a jury of 14 religious experts from Egypt, Malaysia, Algeria, Indonesia, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon and Iran.
Qasem Moqaddami in recitation and Hossein Mo’tamedi in memorization, both from Iran, won the top prizes ($18,000 each) of this year’s competition. The participants from Egypt and Bahrain were the second and third winners of the recitation category. The prize for best memorizers of the Holy Qur’an, after Iran, went to competitors from Bangladesh and Libya.
Everyone among 1.7 billion Muslim has memorized a portion of Holy Qur’an to recite in Arabic in five-times daily prayers. However, there are over ten million Muslims (Hafiz) who have memorized the entire Revelation in Arabic contained in the 30 chapters of Holy Qur’an.
The revelation of Holy Qur’an or The Final Testament to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) began in 610 CE via Archangel Gabriel (Bible’s Holy Spirit) and was completed in the next 23 years. As soon as the Prophet (pbuh) used to inform his Companions of the new revelation from Allah – they used to record it by memorizing it or wrote it on tanned hides, stone tablets, wooden tablets, pieces of cloth, etc. The Prophet (pbuh) himself had memorized the entire Holy Qur’an. Every Ramazan all the portions of the Qur’an that had been revealed, including the order of the verses, were recited and reconfirmed by the Prophet (pbuh) with Archangel Jabriel. During the last Ramadan, before the demise of the Prophet (pbuh), Holy Qur’an was rechecked and reconfirmed twice.
One set of manuscripts of the entire revelation was in the possesion of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It was during the time of Islam’s third Caliph Usman when the entire revelation was put into a single book-form by coping it from original manuscripts. Two such copies of the copied text of the original Qur’an authenticated by the Prophet are present to this day – one at the museum in Tashkent and the other at the Topkopi Palace Museum in Istanbul, Turkey.
“We have, without doubt, sent down the Message; and We will assuredly Guard it (from corruption),” Holy Qur’an 15:9.
