Professor Karen L. King (Harvard Divinty School) has claimed that she had found an unreported secret of Jesus’ life; he had a wife? She has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century claiming Jesus had a wife. Interestingly, though Dr. King showed the papyrus fragment, encased in glass, to reporters from Jewish-owned media; The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Harvard Magazine in her garret office in the tower at Harvard Divinity School last Thursday.

Karen King first learned about what she calls “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife” when she received an e-mail in 2010 from a private collector who asked her to translate it. Dr. King, 58, specializes in Coptic literature, and has written books on the Gospel of Judas, the Gospel of Mary of Magdala, Gnosticism and women in antiquity.

Incidently, Karen is not the first to come with this revelation. Barbara Thiering, Australian historian who specializes in early Christian history – in her book ‘Jesus the Man‘ - had claimed that Jesus married Mary Magdalene, and later divorced her. Thiering also claims that Jesus was not of a virgin birth, that Joeph married Mary, she gave birth to Jesus and other children- and he did not die on the cross.

In April 2006, the National Geographic News reported the resurrection of Gospel of Judas, being lost for 1700 years. The Gospel written in Coptic script, exenorated Judas Iscariot, a Jewish hero, for betraying Jesus. The Gospel of Judas claims that Judas was only obeying his master’s wishes when he betrayed Jesus with a kiss!

Then there is the controversial Gospel of Barnabas written by Jesus’ half-brother by Joseph’s previous marriage (Matthew 13:55 and Acts 4:36-37). It was found by Italian monk, Fra Marino, in Vatican library in 1549. The original manuscript is preserved in the Viennese Museum in Austria. It was translated into English language by Rev. Canon Lonsdale Ragg and his wife Laura – and was published in England, in 1907. However, the Gospel of Baranabas is rejected by both Christian and Jewish scholars – as it presents Jesus as described in Holy Qur’an; born to virgin Mary, one of Allah’s prophets, never married and did not die on a cross.

The Christian Bible’s New Testament Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John – depict Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve (in fact eleven + Jesus himself) Apostles of Jesus, as a traitor. In biblical accounts Judas gives up Jesus Christ to his Roman and Jewish opponents, who later crucify him.

In 2006, National Geographic Society published ‘Book of Judas’ in which it had glorified Judas Iscariot as Jewish hero.

Pope Benedict XVI in his book entitled Jesus of Nazareth-Part II - has exonerated Jews for Jesus’ crucification.

“There is no basis in Scripture for the argument that the Jewish people as a whole were responsible for Jesus’ death,” wrote Pope.

Holy Qur’an, claims that both Yahud and Nasara lie when they say that Jesus died on the Cross, because the man who died on the Cross was an imposter (Simon of Cyrene or Judas Iscariot). Jesus was saved by Allah by raising him alive to Heaven and he will return to Earth before the Doomsday to die a natural death.

“And their saying is ‘we slew the Messiah, Jesus Son of Mary, Allah’s messenger’ – They slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so to them. And those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture. For of a surety they slew him not; but Allah took him up to Himself. Allah is Almighty and All-Wise,” Holy Qur’an , Surah Al-Nisaa (The Women)’ 4:157-159.
