India: Hate Speech, Hindu vs Muslim

On January 3, 2013, Andhra Pradesh (formerly Muslim princely state of Hyderabad, occupied by Indian Army in October 1948) police booked provincial MP and leader of All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Akbaruddin Owaisi, for hate speech. On December 24, 2012, Owaisi at a public meeting in Adilabad had allegedly said that (150 million) Muslims would need just 15 minutes without the police to show (820 million) Hindus who is more powerful. The ruling Hindu government and Hindu media have blamed Owaisi waging war against the state and promoting enmity between Hindu majority and country’s (Muslim, Sikh, Christian, etc.) minorities.

In response to Owaisi’s paper-threat – Hindu communal party VHP leader Praveen Togadia said that his party would turn Bhagyalakshmi temple into another Ayodhya movement. Police has booked Togadia on minor charges of ‘hate speech’.

Praveen Togadia was referring to centuries-old Barbri Mosque in Ayodha, which was demolished by Hindu mob on December 7, 1992. The anti-Muslim movement was lead by prominent Hindu leaders, such as, India’s interior minister LK Advani, Sadhvi Rithambara and Ashok Singhal. Muslims in Mumbai and other cities carried protest marches against the demolition of the mosque which turned into Hindu-Muslim communal riots resulting in thousands of Muslims killed, women raped and over 100,000 Muslim became refugees.

Akbaruddin’s father Salahuddin and late Imam Bukhari of Jama-e-Mosque New Delhi were the only two Muslim leaders who told the Muslims of Mumbai after the riots to hang black flags on January 26, India’s Republic Day.

No Hindu journalist or leader, to best of my knowledge, has condemned Praveen Togadia for his Muslim hatred in public. However, as usual, there has never been a shortage of hypocrites among Muslims. Bollywood writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar has called Akbaruddin Qwaisi “enemy of Muslims”. Irshadul Haque, a writer and self-appointed social worker from Bihar, has equated Akbaruddin with racist Hindutva leader Bal Thackeray (d. 2012) who admired Hitler and Israel.

“The Owaisi family is exactly like the Thackeray family of Maharashtra. After your grandfather’s death, your father Salahuddin Owaisi took charge of the family firm, and tried to expand it. Your father occasionally roared, often talked about Muslims and what is happening to them, and occasionally spoke against Hindus, but you have crossed all boundaries,” wrote Irshadul Haque, OutlookIndia, January 4, 2013.
