On March 3, 2013, Dr. Sarmila Bose PhD appeared on the pro-Israel BBC World Service Newshour program to discuss the protests and violence in Bangladesh as result of pro-Indian Sheikh Hasina Wajed government’s sentencing of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death for allegedly committing war crimes during the so-called “1971 war of liberation”.
Criticizing the lack of independence of the trial, Sarmila noted, “I don’t think this is a battle between Islamists and secular people. This is a battle between those who believe there should be a rule of law and those who believe they can get away without a rule of law … The current government has brought about a situation where you don’t have rule of law, because you’re not according rule of law to the Jamaat.”
In 2005, Dr. Bose told a US State Department conference on the 1971 Pakistan-India war over East Pakistan that Pakistan Army did not commit rape of Bengali women as claimed by Dhaka and New Delhi.
The Boston-born academic, Dr. Sarmila Bose, belongs to the family of famous Bengali anti-British Raj resistance leader, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (died 1945).
