Louis Farrakhan, the leader of the Nation of Islam, is no doubt the most feared Afro-American religious figure by the pro-Israel Jewish groups. They have been running a smear campaign against Farrakhan, lead by Abraham Foxman, head of Jewish lobby group, Anti-Defamation League (ADL), for decades.
On June 14, Farrakhan joined a rally, sponsored by the National Coalition of Leaders to Save Section 5 of the Voting Right Act, which is being debated by the US Supreme Court. Days ahead of Farrakhan’s arrival, the Jewish Federation in its email warned the local Jewish community that “On Friday morning, one of America’s most vicious antisemites, Louis Farrakhan, head of Nation of Islam, will be in Birmingham and then will journey to three other Alabama destinations“.
“They keep you spending money going back to court. No. We want laws enforced. We want justice. We can’t settle for anything less,” Farrakhan said during his roughly 17-minute speech.
“I did not deprive any Jewish person of the right to worship G-d in the manner that they choose, but to bomb a church is the epitome of hatred and total disrespect, so that did not come from Louis Farrakhan,” he said.
“You cannot find one synagogue I desecrated. You cannot find one Jewish person I have harmed, except I refuse to be silent when I know the truth. And it was Jesus who said you shall know the truth and the truth will set us free,” he said.
“So from Alabama and Shelby County, where this court case originated, let’s have a movement and let’s keep on moving until we can say with truth, I thank God almighty. I’m not going to keep singing we shall overcome. I’m longing for the day we can say together, we have overcome, so truly we are free at last,” he added.
The other speakers included Southern Christian Leadership Conference CEO Charles Steele, Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford, state Sen. Hank Sanders of Selma and others. But the draw for many attending was Farrakhan, who pointed out the nearby Sixteenth Street Baptist Church where four girls killed in bombing were “martyred for a cause more precious than their precious lives.”
Clive Webb in his book, ‘Fight Against Fear: Southern Jews and Black Civil Rights‘, says that the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church by the White supremacist Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members in 1963, was a public disaster that expedited the passage of the Civil Right Act in 1964. Webb also claims that Southern Jews and White Christian racist groups were united based on their common background in slave trade in Caribean and Latin America. KKK always had Jewish financial supporters like Philip Morris, the tabacco tycon.
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), a Jewish civil rights group, also voicced it anger at Farrakhan’s participation in the rally. Dana Vickers Shelley, SPLC spokeswoman for Montgomery office said: “People have their rights to participate, but we’re just concerned about the Nation of Islam speaking out in a negative, hateful way about other Americans. I hope people would not ignore the importance of the Voting Right Act and it doesn’t get lost in (Farrakhan) hateful history and pattern of hateful comments“.
The SPLC has declared the Nation of Islam as “hate group”. On April 29, 2013, both Farrakhan and SPLC leader Mark Potok appeared on Rock Newman Show. Farrakhan in response to Potok’s allegations, said it were the Jews and White folks which committed hatred toward Black people and the other way around. Listen to the interview here.
The Voting Right Act was signed by president Lyndon Johnson (an Israeli stooge) in 1965. Currently it’s debated by the US Supreme Court. Four of the nine judges appeared willing to agree with Congress that more progress needs to be made before freeing states from the federal special monitoring, but the other five conservative judges were much more critical. Justice Antonin Scalia called the act, “perpetuation of racial entitlement”. Last year, Scalia, a devout Catholic, told the Catholic Information Center that among the nine judges; three are Jewish (representing less than 2% of US population), and six Catholics (representing 22% of US population). Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts’ cousin Jean Podrasky is lesbian (ABC News, March 25, 2013). Justice Elena Kagan, is Jewish and reportedly a closet lesbian. She never married and has no children.
