Yesterday, Indian Congress and Hindutva leaders paid glowing tributes to KM Gandhi on his 144th birthday. The leaders who attended the ceremony at Gandhi Memorial (Rajghat), included President Pranab Mukherjee, vice-President Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, ruling Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and Hindutva BJP leader LK Advani, the mass murderer of Muslims in Gujrat.
Gandhi, who was assassinated by a Hindu extremist in 1948, was a very controversial figure. Most Indian Hindus regard him a Hindu Saint, though in real life he was not a Hindu scholar or a religious preacher. Gandhi was a shrewed politician who used religion to gain his political agenda.
In 1938, Gandhi rejected World Zionist Organization’s plan to divide the historic Muslim Palestine, even though he sympathized with European Jews for their persecution by the Nazis and the Church. He advised the Jewish leaders to build a mass non-violent movement against their persecution in the countries they live.
“But”, Gandhi asserted, “My sympathy does not blind me to the requirements of justice. The cry for the national home for the Jews does not make much appeal to me. The sanction for it is sought in the Bible and in the tenacity with which the Jews have hankered after their return to Palestine. Why should they not, like other peoples of the earth, make that country their home where they are born and where they earn their livelihood?“
On July 14, 1946, Gandhi said: “In my opinion, they (the Jews) have erred grievously in seeking to impose themselves on Palestine with the aid of America and Britain and now with the aid of naked terrorism. Why should they resort to terrorism to make good their forcible landing in Palestine?“
For his anti-Zionism stand, Gandhi was portrayed as “antisemite and Jew hater” by the Jewish groups. In January 2008, Gandhi’s grandson, Arun Gandhi, president of Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at the University of Rochester was forced to resign as result of Jewish Lobby campaign against his article in the Jewish Washington Post (January 7, 2008), titled ‘Jewish Identity Can’t Depend on Violence‘.
“You don’t befriend anyone, you dominate them. We have created a culture of violence (Israel and the Jews are the biggest players) and that Culture of Violence is eventually going to destroy humanity,” wrote Arun Gandhi.
The anti-Arun campaign was lead by Yehuda Pearl, president of the Daniel Pearl Foundation, and father of Mossad spy Daniel Pearl, who was murdered in 2002 by members of a Pakistani anti-USrael group for spying on them.
Joseph Lelyveld, Gandhi’s Jewish biographer, in book, ‘Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi And His Struggle With India’ , has claimed Gandhi to be bisexual and racist. Lelyveld claims that Gandhi had sexual relation with German-Jewish bodybuilder Dr. Hermann Kallenbach for many years in South Africa.
The Father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah had mix feelings about Gandhi when he worked as the top Muslim leader and President of All India Congress Party in the 1920s. in those days, Jinnah was known as the Ambassador of Hindu-Muslim Unity. Jinnah always challenged Gandhi’s religious credentials and even called him “hipocrite”.
In 2009, Indian politician, journalist and author, Jaswant Singh’s book ‘The Jinnah Legacy’, in which he blamed Nehru and Patel for the partition of Insia into India and Pakistan. The Hindu extremists could not digest the truth. The book was banned in Gujrat state. Singh received death threats from even members of his own Hindutva BJP party.
Jinnah never forced his religious beliefs (Shia Muslim) over others. His concept of Pakistan was a democratic state guided by Islamic Shari’ah with equality and religious freedom for all its citizens.
And finally, anything that serves Israeli interest, it becomes kosher. For example, with all their hatred toward Gandhi, Jerusalem municipality decided last year to set-up a Gandhi Memorial on a piece of land stolen from a Palestinian in East Jerusalem.
