Last month, Professor Jean Bricmont (University of Louvain in Belgium) authored an article, titled ‘The People Against the 800 Pound Gorilla’ claiming that Israel is pushing Washington to attack Syria.
“An American friend who knows Washington well told us recently that ‘everybody’ there knows that, as far as the drive to war with Syria is concerned, it’s Israel that directs US policy. Why then, we replied, don’t opponents of war say it loud, since, if the American public knew that, support for the war would collapse. Of course, we knew the answer to that question. They’re affraid to say all they know, because if you blame the pro-Israel lobby, you are branded an antisemite in the media and your career is destroyed,” wrote Jean Bricmont and Diana Johnstone.
Bricmont and Johnstone debunk the notion that America’s recent wars against Muslim countries were driven by greed for their natural resources. Like Iraq, Iran, Libya and Syria are willing to sell their oil to the United States. In fact, the United States’ main oil suppliers are Canada, Venezuela and Nigeria.
“Indeed there is no evidence of an “oil lobby” sending its agents to urge members of Congress to vote for war, as AIPAC is doing,” says Bricmont.
The article carries a warning for the Jewish communities living outside Israel to denounce Israel’s claim that it represents the entire world Jewry. The writers fear that Israeli actions could soon push non-Jewish people to start blaming all Jews.
The authors also claim that the ‘War on Syria’ is postponed, not abandoned. The Jewish Lobby will try to ignite the warmania in the near future. The only way to put a stop to America’s illegal wars, is to take sting out of the AIPAC.
Last week, young Iranian writer and author, Kourosh Ziabari, interviewed Dr. Bricmont, who repeated his earlier claim that “Israel is an obstacle to peace in Syria“.
“There is very little one can do, in the West at least, to directly influence events in Syria. It is to be hoped that a Geneva conference opens soon, with negotiations between the government and the rebels, leading eventually to some sort of peace.
But there is a lot one can do to try to stop the constant interference of the U.S. and its European “allies” – lackeys would be a better word – in the internal affairs of other states, including Syria, but also Iran. It is urgent to force our governments to return to the founding principles of the United Nations, namely the equal sovereignty of all states.
A main obstacle that we face in that endeavor is indeed the pressure coming from supporters of Israel, either directly or under the guise of arguments for humanitarian wars. Moreover, it is very difficult to have a serene discussion of that topic, because of the accusation of anti-Semitism, which hangs as a Damocles’ sword above the head of all politicians, intellectuals or journalists here. However, there are signs of a popular revolt against that also. The issues of freedom of speech and of peace are profoundly intertwined, but there is some progress on both fronts,” said Dr. Bricmont.
