Watch the everyday Slinky 'defy' the laws of physics and gravity (but try not to go loopy)

    This is really fascinating:

    22 June 2012

..It's a childhood toy that we have probably all seen - but watch it in slow-motion, and the Slinky appears to defy the laws of physics.

Veritasium.org, a site which wants to share the wonders of science through close-up and slow-motion, gives us a startling new look at how a Slinky, the treasured toy which first sprang to life in 1945, seems to ignore gravity.

As the Veritasium team drops the Slinky, it starts collapsing from the top-down. But the bottom of the Slinky unnervingly stays put - hanging in space as though it is still being held.

Wow, that's amazing! You would expect the bottom also fall. Makes you wonder why gravity is not pulling it down? Doesn't gravity acts on every object?
Can you see past your belief systems?

    That's really cool stuff.

The best explanation that I can give to what I see is happening is it's springing back up at the same rate it's falling so it appears to not move at all. Of course, I didn't wait to hear the guy's explanation on it.

    Cool shit!!

It does look like the slinky is defying gravity. But think what's actually happening is like SUNGAZER saying the top is falling at the same rate as the bottom is springing up it just seems like it's standing still.

...still it's neat see in slow-motion.

In the bit with the rainbow colored slinky, you can see at the bottom how its spinning. Take a look, you can see it spiraling as the top is coming down.

Maybe it's winding up like a screw? But if so I think you'd see a lot more movement than that. That's like is also falling oddly. Than
