CASPER

THE FRIENDLY GHOST
Meditation describes a concentrated state of attention on some center of thought or awareness. This is an inward-turning reflection on one’s own mind, worthy of consideration. Instruction in meditation can be acquired from multiple sources. Traditionally, it was necessary to seek the advice of a teacher or mentor for this kind of instruction. Now, it is possible to learn meditation and experience the advantages of its directives via books, the Internet, and audio recordings. Of these, recordings may be the least intrusive method for learning this contemplative practice. Because recordings on the subject of meditation do not require the attention of the subject, their instructions can be more easily absorbed, without disturbing the fragile nature of reflection.
Directions in meditation can be a simple thought upon which to concentrate, or a more complex set of information and commands, guiding a person through their meditation. Often, meditative instruction is thought of as some sort of unusual, spiritual activity. This is a belief that it is important to overcome in the ruminative process. Meditation is completely normal and ordinary, a mindful quality that directs us to consider the world more closely. It is the act of taming the mind, attempting to overcome all the anxieties and problems that fill our habitual thought patterns. While this behavior can be guided, the benefits of instruction in meditation must be brought on by the person themselves. No number of commands can bring the right depth of mindfulness on an unwilling subject, though the teacher is permitted to advise.

Commonly reported benefits from instruction in meditation include an increase in feelings of patience and compassion, feelings of peacefulness and moments of great joy. Meditation instruction can also promote good health and relaxation. Anyone can benefit from using the directions given in this practice to help them cope with stress or feelings of anxiety. Meditative directives are also used by medical experts to aid in stress reduction. This widespread ancient method of contemplation and reflection has been used to great effect all over the world, going back centuries. All types of meditation instruction seem to confer the same advantages. Among the health benefits of meditation instruction are a decreased respiratory rate, slower heart rate, deeper relaxation, decreased muscle tension and headaches, and an improvement in general well-being. The benefits of meditation can be experienced by anyone, regardless of age or physical condition. No matter what an individual’s reason for using this kind of instruction, the practice is universal.

The longer someone practices meditation, the greater is the likelihood that their goals will shift towards personal growth and all of its benefits. The mindfulness which results from following the directives of meditation instruction begins to envelop the person’s whole life, allowing greater appreciation of the world. Practiced regularly, directed meditation promotes a sense of control, calmness, and relaxation.
