Repairs LHC certainly take until the end of October
The repair of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) near Geneva will take longer than expected. The start of the mega particle accelerator is now scheduled for September and the first collisions between particles would follow the end of October, so operator CEN reported Monday.
Until now, always said that the measurements on his last in July could begin.
The LHC was last September for the first time started. After a week he went spectacularly wjze broken by a bad connection between two superconducting cable sections it went. The LHC on September 19 was defective, a few days after he first was started. It started when a bad weld in a superconducting cable melted through. The heat released was liquid helium, that the superconducting circuits was chilling, in record time to evaporate. The safety valves were the power and the pressure was such that some electromagnets their concrete pedestals were beaten.
CERN is now no risk. Thus, larger valves installed, and a highly sensitive early warning system for poor electrical connections with a sensitivity in the nano-ohmbereik. It would already have read at least one other detected that is not good. At the same time for safety work on the accelerator tightened.
Now wants to compensate the CERN particle accelerator the whole winter to run through. Normally he winter shut down because the electricity costs much higher.
