JULIAN Assange's WikiLeaks organisation has announced plans for the former computer hacker to run for the Australian Senate.

Despite his continuing detention under house arrest in England over sexual assault allegations, his group's official Twitter account yesterday claimed legal advice suggested he was still eligible to run.

"We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run," WikiLeaks said.

WikiLeaks also confirmed it planned to run another candidate against Prime Minister Julia Gillard in the Victorian seat of Lalor.

An article posted on the WikiLeaks website predicted that, if successful, "ASIO would have a collective heart attack".

"Having Julian Assange elected to the Senate would give him advantages, at the least, the embarrassment of the Australian Government having to communicate to whatever authority in Sweden - or the US as the case may be - about 'Senator Assange'," it stated. Assange, born in Townsville, is best known for establishing the WikiLeaks website, which publishes information from whistleblowers, whether or not it is classified material.

It has been reported that US prosecutors drew up secret charges against Assange about a year ago and he is still waiting on a Supreme Court decision in the UK on his appeal against extradition to Sweden.
