As some airlines consider standing seats another carrier is introducing an entirely opposite experience - cuddle class.
Unlike most horizontal options on airplanes, which are aimed at the first-class crowd, Air New Zealand's new "skycouch" is in economy class. Passengers can buy three seats that turn into a couch roughly the size of a twin bed. Footrests under the seat flip up to create the flat surface.
The first two seats come at regular price while the third is offered at a roughly 50 per cent discount. The class will be offered on flights using Boeing's 777-300 aircraft.
"For those who choose, the days of sitting in economy and yearning to lie down and sleep are gone,'' said CEO Rob Fyfe in a statement. "The dream is now a reality, one that you can even share with a travelling companion - just keep your clothes on."
So much for the mile-high club. You can see the new seats in action at 0:40 in the video below.
