6.6 magnitude quake hits off Canada's west coast
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) – A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada on Tuesday, but did not prompt a tsunami alert, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake was centered 162 miles southwest of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, at a depth of 6.2 miles, near the Queen Charlotte Islands, an area of frequent earthquakes, the USGS said.
The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was not expected to cause a tsunami on the coast of Canada or the United States and no alerts or warning had been posted.
The USGS initially reported the quake as 6.5 magnitude.
The quake was felt on the Queen Charlotte Islands, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
"It felt like a fairly long one ... but it didn't feel overly strong," a police officer in the RCMP's Masset, British Columbia, office said.
