7,000 soldiers and 2,300 federal police in Juárez, Mexico

More Mexican troops arrive in Juárez - El Paso Times.

There are now more than 7,000 soldiers and 2,300 federal police in Juárez as part of Joint Operation Chihuahua, the federal crackdown on crime.

When approaching a checkpoint, motorists should slow down, turn on the vehicle’s interior light, roll down windows, and the driver should place both hands at the top of the steering wheel where they are visible from the outside.

Military officials are expected to take command of the city police on Monday and later of transit police and the municipal Cereso prison, officials said.

“How is freedom measured, in individuals as in nations? By the resistance which has to be overcome, by the effort it costs to stay aloft. One would have to seek the highest type of free man where the greatest resistance is constantly being overcome: five steps from tyranny, near the threshold of the danger of servitude.”

Juarez police officers stripped of their weapons by the military

Unarmed Ciudad Juarez cops to patrol with army.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Thousands of Mexican soldiers took a tighter grip on policing in the violence-scarred border city of Ciudad Juarez on Tuesday and the retired general in charge of police emphasized the military dominance by announcing city officers will be stripped of their weapons while on patrol.

New Public Safety Secretary Julian Rivera Breton announced that the troubled police force in the city of 1.3 million would be unarmed, serving largely to help soldiers answer calls for help and pursue suspects.
