A 37-year-old woman has died in a bizarre accident in the parking lot of a hospital in Newmarket, Ont.
Police say the woman was leaning out of her van's open door on Friday to scan her ticket at the South Lake Regional Health Centre when the vehicle lurched forward.
She was pinned between the van's door and frame and suffered critical brain injuries.
The mother of three young children was visiting a relative in hospital.
Though no one witnessed the crash, someone saw the woman shortly afterward and called for help.
She died of her injuries in hospital early Christmas morning.
Investigators aren't sure if her foot slipped off the brake or if she accidentally hit the accelerator.
"It's an absolute freak accident," said Sgt. Don Dalgleish of York Regional Police.
Police are not releasing the woman's name at the family's request.
