A body recovered from the Charlottetown harbour Wednesday afternoon is that of a missing Ottawa man, P.E.I. police have confirmed.
The body of Trevor William Rankin, 38 — who had been missing since Christmas Eve — was retrieved from the water at about 2:45 p.m. AT.
Police-hired divers discovered the body close to shore between the Charlottetown Yacht Club and the Coast Guard building — behind the Harbourside apartment complex.
Rankin's mother lives in one of the apartments, where he had been staying during the holidays.
"The family have been notified that we recovered a body and are certainly very distressed by that," said Sgt. Brad MacConnell of the major crimes unit in Charlottetown.
Grid search conducted
Rankin was last seen about 2:30 a.m. AT on Dec. 24, exiting a cab at Dorchester and Queen streets, a short walk from the harbour. According to his family, he had been out clubbing with his nephew.
On Monday, police searched the harbour using boats and an underwater camera.
For Wednesday's search, police hired a four-member dive team from local company Diversified Divers.
One diver went into the water for a systematic, grid search of the area, walking along the harbour bottom. A communication line linked him to the other team members on land.
Once the divers had located the body, an RCMP team that had been searching the harbour in a Zodiac then retrieved it.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning.
