OKLAHOMA CITY -- With many Oklahomans feeling the frigid temperatures, a regular winter morning routine could leave them with a fine.
According to a state statute, it’s illegal to leave one’s car running in Oklahoma.
"The person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall not permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine,” the statute states.
The Oklahoma City Police Department said unattended vehicles left running is the biggest cause of car thefts.
When bitterly cold temperatures arise, so do car thefts, police said.
The Tulsa Police Department recently launched a campaign to raise awareness about the cold crime.
Police said that warming up a vehicle with keys in the ignition makes drivers easy targets, since car thefts are usually a crime of opportunity.
The first time drivers are caught leaving a car unattended and running, they could be fined $211.50.
