Media blackout: Oregon mall shooter was stopped by an armed citizen

While reports of Tuesday's shooting at the Clackamas Town Center Mall in Oregon, dominated the national media, until Friday's horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, one very important detail has been repeatedly (and intentionally) left out of the MSM's coverage.

The shooter, Jacob Tyler Roberts, was confronted with an armed citizen, at which time he ran away and shot himself. By the time police arrived on the scene, Roberts was already dead.

That armed man was 22-year-old Nick Meli, who was at the mall shopping with a young woman who was babysitting her friend's baby.

On Friday, KGW News Channel 8, the only media outlet to cover this part of the story, posted the following report on their website:

Clackamas Mall Shooter was confronted by armed citizenClackamas Mall Shooter was confronted by armed citizen

"I heard three shots and turned and looked at Casey and said, 'are you serious?,'" he said. The friend and baby hit the floor. Meli, who has a concealed carry permit, positioned himself behind a pillar.

"He was working on his rifle," said Meli. "He kept pulling the charging handle and hitting the side." The break in gunfire allowed Meli to pull out his own gun, but he never took his eyes off the shooter.

"As I was going down to pull, I saw someone in the back of the Charlotte move, and I knew if I fired and missed, I could hit them," he said. Meli took cover inside a nearby store. He never pulled the trigger. He stands by that decision.

"I'm not beating myself up cause I didn't shoot him," said Meli. "I know after he saw me, I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself."

The gunman was dead, but not before taking two innocent lives with him and taking the innocence of everyone else.

We now know that the assailant's gun had jammed, and when he cleared it, he quickly retreated and shot himself, as Meli continued to keep him in his sights.

Not only has the national media refused to acknowledge this aspect of the deadly event, but law enforcement has as well.

On Tuesday night, Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts held a press conference in which he credited local police officers and deputies with ending the rampage, never mentioning Meli's actions.

Sheriff Roberts said: "I'm really proud of all the different agencies that came together to really step up and put their lives on the line," to "basically hunt down this guy in the mall."

Now, remember, the shooter was already dead when police arrived on the scene.

Killed in the attack were Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, A 15-year-old girl, identified as Kristina Shevchenko, was seriously wounded but was expected to survive.

Of course, the Obamamedia is in full support of even harsher gun control laws and it should come as no surprise that they would suppress any story which provides proof that lawfully armed citizens do prevent crimes and save lives.

Here are a few facts about armed Americans:

-In 1982, the town of Kennesaw, Georgia, passed an ordinance which required all heads of household to have at least one gun in the house. The burglary rate immediately dropped an astounding 89 percent. Ten years after the law was passed, the burglary rate was still 72 percent less than it was in 1981.

-Armed citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as the police do every year in this country (1,527 to 606).

-A 1996 University of Chicago study concluded that states which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rates by 8.5 percent, rapes by 5 percent, aggravated assaults by 7 percent, and robbery by 3 percent.

-According to the National Safety Council, with guns being used 2.5 million times a year in self defense against criminals, firearms are actually used more than 80 times more often to protect lives, rather than to take lives.

-A 1979 Justice Department study entitled Rape Victimization in American Cities, concluded that of more than 32,000 attempted rapes, 32 percent were actually committed. But when a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3 percent of the attempted rapes were actually committed.

-Another Justice Department study found that 57 percent of felons agreed that "criminals are more worried about meeting an armed victim than they are about running the police."

Nick Meli could be a ticking time bomb himself. So you're saying if we have more people walking around like him we'll be more safe in theory. I'm sure there are some merits to the theory until one day Nick has a bad day feeling the world is against him, and has nowhere to turn. Okay, maybe Nick never will feel that way armed walking around amongst the public, but some Nick somewhere will. The odds statistically are in the favor of unstable Nicks being very real; not just a theory. Nicks with a convenient outlet strapped to their side.

Ironically I've shopped at that very mall. I don't want armed people walking around me while I shop their again unless they are trained security, or police contracted from the local PD to walk beats within and around the mall.

I hope you rethink your philosophy regarding this matter, and run the numbers using all the reasoning tools at your disposal.

3 years ago I would have agreed with you 100%, I was convinced we all needed to be disarmed.

Just remember what Thomas Jefferson said:

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government" -Thomas Jefferson

Okay, I have an open mind here.

I would like to ask you at this point, "Why would I need to arm myself with automatic weapons against a populist government?" What would be a scenario, or scenarios, where this question would be answered in the affirmative?

In my opinion automatic weapons or any point and shot weapon our military has access to should be accessibly by all of us. The only thing that prevents such a thing is metal illness. At least when buying a real one it can be registered and tracked.

If somebody wants to kill badly enough, they will find anything they can use to do it, such as manure, gasoline or even underground "black markets". Guns are not the only thing that kills either. Banning them will not solve the problem. Our problem is metal illness, weapons will always be here, mental illness can be cured.

When I was 17 I worked for a small machining shop on weekends, we used to have contests to see who could build weapons out of stuff around the shop. We made some deadly devices. We all still carry that knowledge with us and no amount of banning will change that. There are thousands of shops like this all around the county and we are not the only ones with the knowledge and capability to build weapons.

There is a MythBusters episode concerning prison inmate weapon construction, even confined in prison with limited resources, deadly weapons are constructed. There is nothing more restricted than a prison environment and if prison inmates can construct weapons with VERY limited resources, anybody can, especially with the seemingly next to unlimited resources outside of a prison environment.

People were killing each other long before guns were even invented, and they will continue to do so whether guns are banned or not.

The scenarios all ready happened and are history. American is built on civilians having weapons that were equal to the British army. There would be no "land of the free" without that right.

You're obviously giving the Tim Mcveigh, Ted Kaczynski and others like them, argument. I understand.

I believe that if people are going to possess military grade rifles and ammo it should be under lock and key at all times when these items are not being handled by the rightful owner. Failing to do so should be a B felony.

For instance the mother of this last mass shooter would still be alive along with all the others if she had those weapons secured in a gun safe.

    PS
You worked for a machine shop at 17? WOW. I'm from SE Michigan. My brother-in-law is a retired master machinist and set up operator of the old Davenports and Rockwells using the old dial micrometers basing everything just off prints drawn up on a drafting board. That's some skill compared to today in the age of CADD, CNC machines, laser die-cutters, etc.

I've been in the old shops and factories of the old upper Mid-west with my father who was a GM auto engineer. Also at my brother-in-laws shop Mueller Brass. I had another brother-in-law who worked for TRW. When he got out of the Marines and was hired by TRW he underwent a 2 year training course apprenticeship. He eventually obtained his journeymen card. What I'm saying here if you have such talents at 17... You would be Ivy League material launching rockets into space today.

How did you swing such a summer job? A job where you could set machines for fun to make weapons? I would consider myself very lucky if I was able to get just a mop job at that age.

Here is more info on what I was trying to say here:

These 3D printers are in almost all machine shop across this country, they are not that expensive and criminals can easily get their hands on one and make a gun, capable of firing 600 rounds a min. Price of one these units $20000 to as low as $500. Soon to be in everyone home.
