Four police officers were shot dead yesterday in a cold-blooded ambush at a coffee shop on the edge of a US Air Force base in America’s Pacific Northwest.

The four uniformed officers, one of them a woman, were gunned down while working on their laptop computers as they prepared for work around 8:30 am local time. Their marked patrol cars were parked outside.

Police described one suspect as a black man with “scruffy” facial hair wearing a black coat and jeans, who fled on foot. Initial reports said there may also have been a second gunman who was white.

Road blocks were set up in the area as an intensive manhunt got underway. Officers took a police dog into a nearby apartment complex.

Four police officers have been shot dead in an ambush at a coffee shop in Washington state, officials say.

It happened on Sunday morning inside a Forza Coffee Company in Lakewood, about 60 kilometers south of Seattle.

The officers - three men and one woman - were sitting at their laptops when the shooter entered the café and opened fire. All were in uniform, wearing vests and had parked their marked cruisers outside.

There were two employees and a number of customers in the shop at the time, but no one else was injured.

Detectives believe the suspect deliberately targeted the officers and the attack was not part of a robbery.

The gunman is believed to have escaped on foot, and a $10,000 (U.S.) reward has been offered for information on his whereabouts.

Police in Washington have locked down a Seattle neighborhood in hopes of coaxing out the man believed to be behind Sunday’s execution of four police officers.

Police have used teargas and could be heard firing shots and encouraging Maurice Clemmons, 37, to surrender. An ABC producer on the scene said a Seattle home is surrounded by a SWAT team and a robot will be sent inside soon.

The suspect has a gunshot wound to the abdomen that could be fatal if untreated, police sources told ABC News’ Neal Karlinsky. That information came from associates of the suspect who helped him overnight and were later picked up by police.
