One of America’s powerful Israel lobby groups, ADL, has forced Tribune Media Services management to apologize in print for printing a crossword clue where the three-letter answer for Shakespeare’s ‘Shylock’ was JEW.
America’s highest paid Israel lobbyist, Abraham Foxman, head of ADL, immediately issued a statement demanding an apology in print and refrain from printing future puzzle clues which portrays Jews in negative.
“Perhaps the puzzle authors were unaware of the use of Shakespeare’s Shylock character throughout the years as a vehicle for antisemitism,” said the statement.
“The puzzle should not have been distributed with that clue, and we apologize for the offense it caused. The issue has been discussed with the creators and editors involved, and the clue will not be used again in a Tribune Media Services crossword. We are very sensitive to racial or cultural references in the content we distribute and regret that this slipped through,” Mary Elson, the Jewish managing editor for Tribune Media Services issued an apology in response to Abe Foxman’s statement.
The Tribune Media Services is a subsidiary of Tribune Company which owns the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and several other regional newspapers. The Tribune Company is owned by Sam Zell, who is Jewish.
The puzzle, authored by Victor Barocas (Jewish), with Rich Norris serving as editor, was published June 28, 2013, and appeared in newspapers and websites, such as the L.A. Times and Chicago Tribune.
Ben Tausig, author of book, ‘Curious History of the Crossword’, says: “The clue for JEW here doesn’t offend me, as a Jew specifically or as a person in general, because I recognize that it refers to a dramatic character and nothing more. The editor’s use of this clue is perfectly defensible here. It’s not antisemitic at any level“.
In William Shakespeare’s original play, ‘The Merchant of Venice’, Shylock is a Jewish moneylender (banker), who is portrayed as greedy and deceitful. The character symbolizes Europeans’ view of Jewish elites during the time Shakespeare lived. Consider Europe’s Jewish Rothschilds banking dynasty, which was worth $100 million in 1817 – and currently could be worth over $1 trillion.
French academic and author, Ghislain Muller in his book ‘Was Shakespeare a Jew?’ has claimed that William Shakespeare’s grandfather, Richard Shapiro, was a Jewish immigrant from Bohemia. Shapiro settled in England in the 1510s and his religion, assuming the name Shakespeare.
