Super Battery is coming
Wednesday, March 11, 2009

A battery that is recharged in ten seconds. It sounds too good to be true, but American engineers have been for each other.

What will the future world on its head up? Artificial intelligence? Nanotechnology? The discovery of extraterrestrial life? Leading scientists came up with the most different answers when they recently received this question before, but the most simple answer came from physicist John Barrow: a good battery. He will change society dramatically as we get a really good battery.
None illogical thought. Many technology in recent years become mobile and could develop much further as there were batteries which last longer and can be quickly charged. A better battery would be the electric car is a huge incentive to give. Philosopher Daniel Dennett, the battery even the most important invention of the past two thousand years mentioned.
Barrow and Dennett will be happy with performance of the two MIT engineers have done. They have developed a battery can be recharged in seconds, instead of hours. This is an edited lithium battery, which in 10 to 20 seconds completely filled, writing Byoungwoo Kang and Gerbrand Ceder in Nature.
Highway to Well
Lithium batteries are in cell phones, iPods and even battery electric cars. They have a very large energy density. This has unfortunately also a disadvantage: charging and discharging takes very long. Scientists have long thought that the slowness was due to the fact that ions and electrons is not faster the battery could move.
But a few years ago showed that the problem is somewhere else Saturday Ions can indeed move very quickly by lithium, however, first in the material to find. That is only through tunnels to the surface. Ions and many, many time to make a tunnel to find.
Ceder and Kang decided therefore ion a hand to help. They developed a sort of ring around the battery directly through the surface of the material change. Through the ring, the ions rapidly move in search of a tunnel. Once they have found, pop them in there. The operation will also further ensure that the material more resistant to frequent use.
The researchers expect that the new type of battery within two to three years on the market. "The possibility of batteries in seconds to load and discharge may lead to new innovations and change our way of life ', the researchers expected.
It seems to strongly suggest that the most important invention of the last two thousand years a new phase is. Barrow as we may believe the world is changing dramatically in the coming years. But it would also be quite nice if a cell phone or iPod in just a minute is charged.
