WASHINGTON -- The political freedom in the world last year for the third time in a row continued to decline. Reported that the American organization Freedom House Tuesday in its annual report on political rights and civil liberties.

Cause of the decline is in the presidential election in Russia that "neither free nor fair" was, according to the organization. Also in the neighboring countries of Russia is a trend toward more authoritarian policies visible.

One of the few light last year was the rise of freedom in South Asia, although the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. However, according to the report the democratic situation in Iraq improved as a result of the improved security situation and a growing participation of the Sunnis in the political process.

The organization fears that this year's freedoms in authoritarian countries by the economic crisis will further decrease.
