New human species discovered in Russia

March 27, 2010

A new human species was discovered in Russia, thanks to DNA tests on a finger bone that was unearthed in Siberia. The person, who estimated 30,000 years ago lived, was not among the species sapiens Gay, the only human species today, but was not a Neanderthal, a sort of people who died out 35,000 years ago.

The Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig was the discovery, which are reported in the scientific journal Nature. The discovery suggests that there was another emigration of hominid ancestors from Africa, where all kinds Gay their ancestral roots lie. So far it was thought that only the Gay sapiens, Neanderthals and Gay erectus was able to move this far.

The bone, which in 2008 was found in a cave in the Altajgebergte in southern Siberia, still contained enough mitochondrial DNA to be analyzed by the team led by John Krause and Svante Pääbo. (dpa / gb)
