First floating wind turbine provides electricity

September 12, 2009

For the first time a floating-megawatt wind power is delivered. Siemens and the Norwegian StatoilHydro Hywind to the research, which was officially launched September 8, 2009, show that wind turbines at sea may contribute to the mains. The project has a probationary period of 2 years.

The wind turbine is 220 meter deep rooted. Siemens supplied the power generating unit of the project, with a capacity of 2.3 megawatts (MW) and a rotor diameter of 82 meter. The wind turbines can be placed in water from 120 to 700 meter deep. The electricity is moved through a submarine cable.
