A funeral was held Wednesday in Mississauga, Ont., for a 14-month-old who died after an incident at a home-based daycare.
Duy-An Nguyen was taken to hospital last Wednesday and taken off life support two days later.
About 50 people gathered for the service.
Steve Nguyen, not a relative, but a member of the same church as the infant's family, said he felt compelled to come and pay his respects.
He said he felt "deep sorrow for the family. I don't know what happened."
A relative of the little girl said her parents had made other child-care arrangements and had planned to remove Duy-An from the daycare.
Child-care advocates and the Ontario Federation of Labour are calling for a coroner's inquest to look into her death.
They also want a probe into what they say are failures in Ontario's child-care system.
The groups say long waiting lists for licensed child care in Ontario force parents to use unlicensed and unregulated facilities.
The daycare operator, April Luckese, 35, has been charged with second-degree murder in the baby's death.
Luckese has been placed in protective custody while she's in jail because her lawyer is worried about her safety.
Luckese is scheduled to make her next court appearance on Jan. 21.
