IDF killed civilians in Gaza under lax rules of engagement
Wed, 18 Mar 2009

Ha’aretz is Israel’s oldest daily news publication. I began intently reading Ha’aretz since the recent invasion of Gaza which saw the death of over 1400 Palestinians, hundreds being children.

In the coming days, Ha’aretz will be publishing testimony from IDF troops. What these soldiers witnessed documents how IDF commanders gave their soldiers far too much freedom and permission to behave criminally and with murderous brutality.

Examples:

Another squad leader from the same brigade told of an incident where the company commander ordered that an elderly Palestinian woman be shot and killed; she was walking on a road about 100 meters from a house the company had commandeered.

The squad leader said he argued with his commander over the permissive rules of engagement that allowed the clearing out of houses by shooting without warning the residents beforehand. After the orders were changed, the squad leader’s soldiers complained that “we should kill everyone there [in the center of Gaza]. Everyone there is a terrorist.”

The inquiries which have followed Operation Cast Lead are sure to cement the world’s condemnation and empower international lawyers who are working hard to prepare cases of war crimes against Israel’s political leaders and military personnel.

I commend Ha’aretz for publishing these very unpopular stories and urge everyone to check in on Haaretz.com for the next couple days.
