Millions of air passengers face an increase in pat-down searches and hand luggage inspections under a government crackdown on airport security after the Christmas Day airline bombing attempt.
The government will announce this afternoon that body searches will be increased and explosive-detecting swab tests of mobile phones and carry-on bags will also be stepped up.
Some restrictions on flights to the UK from states linked to terrorist activity are also being considered.
However, the aviation industry is lobbying against the measures, which airport owners and airlines say are a cosmetic response to a new form of terror threat.
