Inhofe declares victory in speech on global warming

“I proudly declare 2009 as the ‘Year of the Skeptic,’ the year in which scientists who question the so-called global warming consensus are being heard,’’ the Oklahoma Republican said.

“Until this year, any scientist, reporter or politician who dared raise even the slightest suspicion about the science behind global warming was dismissed and repeatedly mocked.’’

Inhofe recalled his own 2003 remarks in which he said much of the debate over global warming was predicated on fear rather than science.

Alarmists warned of a future plagued by catastrophic flooding, economic dislocations, droughts and mosquito-borne diseases, he said.

Inhofe to call for hearing into CRU, U.N. climate change research

The publication of more than 1,000 private e-mails that climate change skeptics say proves the threat is exaggerated has prompted one key Republican senator to call for an investigation into their research.

In an interview with The Washington Times on Monday, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) announced he would probe whether the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) “cooked the science to make this thing look as if the science was settled, when all the time of course we knew it was not.”

“[T]his thing is serious, you think about the literally millions of dollars that have been thrown away on some of this stuff that they came out with,” Inhofe, the ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, said during the interview.

Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, today sent letters to several scientists, some of whom allegedly manipulated data to prove the scientific “consensus” of global warming, as well as to the inspectors general of several federal agencies, notifying them to retain documents related to the release of emails from the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit in England.

“The stakes in this controversy are significant, as it appears that the basis of federal programs, pending EPA rulemakings, and cap-and-trade legislation was contrived and fabricated,” Sen. Inhofe said. “Moreover, it appears that, in an attempt to conceal the manipulation of climate data, information disclosure laws may have been violated.

“I certainly don’t condone the manner in which these emails were released; however, now that they are in the public domain, lawmakers have an obligation to determine the extent to which the so-called ‘consensus’ of global warming, formed with billions of taxpayer dollars, was contrived in the biased minds of the world’s leading climate scientists.”

The letters are the first step in the investigation of the climate scandal. Last week, emails released by a computer hacker revealed that several leading climate scientists allegedly manipulated climate data and research used by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). These scientists also appear to have refused outside access to their raw data, obstructed freedom of information requests, and plotted ways to prevent the publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals by scientists who question global warming alarmism.

Inhofe Asks Boxer to Investigate Possible Scientific ‘Conspiracy’ in ‘Climategate’

Inhofe said the recent disclosure of emails between several prominent climatologists reveal “possible deceitful manipulation of important data and research used by the US Global Change Research Program” and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.”

He suggested “a possible conspiracy by scientists, some of whom receive or have received US taxpayer funds, to stifle open, transparent debate on the most pressing issues of climate science.”

Inhofe also noted that there appeared to be “a campaign to vilify scientists who question global warming alarmism.”

Inhofe (R-Okla.), Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, sent a letter today to EPW Committee Chairman Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) requesting hearings on the recent disclosure of emails between some of the world’s most preeminent climatologists—emails that reveal apparent attempts to manipulate data, vilify scientists with opposing viewpoints, and circumvent information disclosure laws.

Dear Chairman Boxer:

The recent disclosure of emails between several prominent climatologists—including the authors of temperature records used by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—raises a number of issues, including the following: 1) potential violations of federal and state information disclosure laws; 2) a possible conspiracy by scientists, some of whom receive or have received US taxpayer funds, to stifle open, transparent debate on the most pressing issues of climate science; 3) an apparent coordinated effort to distort and falsify data; and 4) the appearance of a campaign to vilify scientists who question global warming alarmism.


The emails reveal apparent deceitful manipulation of important data and research used by, among others, the US Global Change Research Program and the IPCC. For instance, one scientist wrote of a “trick” he employed to “hide the decline” in global temperature trends; he also discussed attempts to “redefine what the peer-review literature is” to prevent papers questioning global warming alarmism from appearing in IPCC reports. Another scientist stated, “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming and it is a travesty that we can’t.” Still another wrote, “I tried hard to balance the needs of the science and the IPCC, which were not always the same.”

In addition to these issues, the emails could have far-reaching policy implications, affecting everything from (to name a few) cap-and-trade legislation, state and regional climate change programs, the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Proposed Endangerment and Cause or Contribute Findings for Greenhouse Gases Under Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act,” the US Global Change Research Program, global climate models used by federal agencies, the Department of Interior’s coordinated strategy to address climate change impacts, and international climate change negotiations.

Many of these policies and positions will have enormous economic impacts, not least the EPA’s proposed endangerment finding, which, when finalized, will lead to a torrent of new federal regulations that will destroy thousands of jobs and make electricity and gasoline more expensive for consumers and small businesses. The same can be said for cap-and-trade legislation, including the very bill you introduced and reported to the full Senate, as well as the Waxman-Markey bill passed by the House in June.

In short, the stakes involved are of major consequence, and so I respectfully request that you hold hearings to examine the suite of issues involved, including whether laws were broken, key studies compromised, proposed regulations undermined, and taxpayer-funded climate change research deliberately obscured or manipulated. I am encouraged that the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will examine at least some of these issues in a hearing tomorrow. As we have on other issues before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, I look forward to working together on this important matter.

Hello, I’m Jim Inhofe, a*Republican from Oklahoma. I am the top Republican on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Today, the Obama administration announced an unprecedented rule, one that will have far-reaching implications for each and every American. The Administration’s endangerment finding will lead to a wave of new regulations and bureaucracy that will wreak havoc on the American economy, destroy millions of jobs, and force consumers to pay more for electricity and gasoline.

This bureaucratic nightmare is based on flawed science. Lisa Jackson, Obama’s EPA Administrator, admitted to me publicly that EPA based its action today in good measure on the findings of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. She told me that EPA accepted those findings without any serious, independent analysis to see whether they were true. Of course, we now have thousands of emails showing several of the UN’s top scientists apparently evading laws requiring transparency, defaming scientists with opposing viewpoints, and manipulating data to fit preconceived opinions. They cooked the science.

For example, some of the scientists involved worked to exclude inconvenient facts — most notably the fact that there has been no global warming since 1998. The scandal, which has come to be known as “climategate,” has rocked the scientific community. The Atlantic Monthly said, “The stink of intellectual corruption is overpowering.” And the U.K. Telegraph said, “This is the worst scientific scandal of our generation.”

The UN is investigating it; leading academic and scientific institutions are investigating it; and I am investigating it. Yet, Democratic leaders in Congress and the Obama Administration have dismissed it. I agree with Sen. Joe Lieberman, who said of climategate, “We ought to be demanding that that be cleaned up. We ought to be angry about it.”

The endangerment finding also will have virtually no impact on global warming. That’s because India and China, two of the world’s leading emitters of CO2, are left out. Of course, next week President Obama will try to spin “commitments” from India and China to address their emissions — yet these commitments will be effectively meaningless.

So, our jobs and our emissions will move to countries that have few if any environmental requirements. Don’t take my word for it; just ask EPA Administrator Jackson, who said “U.S. action alone will not impact world CO2 levels.”

So today the American people are getting a raw deal: all cost with no benefit. Yet, the Obama Administration is moving forward anyway. Don’t forget that today’s action was taken just as the UN’s Copenhagen global warming conference gets started. President Obama will attend. He desperately wants to show the world he is doing something about global warming. Yet putting on this show has costs and the American people will pay for it — many with higher energy bills and many with their jobs.
