Edmonton police are investigating a killing at a restaurant-lounge early New Year's Day.

Police arrived at the Papyrus Lounge at 3 a.m. local time to investigate a report of a shooting.

Officers found a dead man lying on the floor of the lobby. There were still many people in the lounge.

A second man, who had been shot, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening wounds, police said.

Police believe a fight had broken out in the lounge before the shooting started.

No motive is known and no suspects have been identified.

The Papyrus is located at 112 Street and 107 Avenue.

Police ask anyone with information to call (780) 423-4567 or anonymously tip Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-8477.

Toronto and Calgary also recorded the first homicides of 2011 on New Year's Day.
