Linda Brown – Daughter of Thomas Townsend Brown (TTB)

I have been reading about your father with great interest. One thing that struck me the other day as a possibility, is the character Emmett Brown in the movie "Back to the Future" based on your father and anyway?

Because whenever I read these threads in my head I picture Doc Brown as your father from these movies, am I the only one who sees this?

It's also possible that the character Emmett Brown is a mix of scientists, he does have Einstein like hair.

Dad would laugh but yes.... many called him " Doc Brown" very affectionately.

And as far as the character of Emmet Brown being drawn from him? There are elements of similarity that have always been interesting. I don't know if you have ever visited Zorgons' LivingMoon Pegasus site but he had a whole thread on there about Dad and the similarity between Dads work on Capacitors and " Doc Browns " Flux Capacitor". Hollywood writers get their ideas from various sources and I am sure that they found my Dads work as interesting as you have.

Now look at the NYC token that I happened to use on the front of my book. See a similarity?

Sometimes brand new ideas find better traction in lightweight and engaging stories like " Back to the Future". Thats why they may be so important. Linda

I would try to find you the picture of the Flux Capacitor that Zorgon posted in his " historical section of Townsend Brown" but they have buried the subject there so well who knows ( or cares) enough to bother to even look .... ( which was the plan.... I am sure.... wrap the subject in " Mikado".... call it the " Mikado Brown Civil War" and you will be guaranteed that no one will go there. Very effective. No one has posted a single comment since August sometime.

And another example of what happens when Hollywood nods in a certain direction. Sometimes THEY don't even know it..... In the movie " The Philadephia Experiment" the character that was the lead scientist has an opening scene where he is sitting at his desk... its all very much in the shadows... but he has taken off his watch and is twirling it around and around in his fingers. That was something that my Dad would do when he was busy thinking...all of us knew that he did that..... and I got calls from all over the country from men who had worked with Dad and then had just seen the movie.... they repeatedly said...." How did they KNOW that he did that?" Was it coincidence or just an insider Hollywood nod? I never will know I guess. ( Unless of course someday someone steps forward????) Linda

Funny I was thinking of that this morning... We must had a telepathic thought or something......funny I have read somewhere that the character was meant to be Thomas Townsend Brown...... It said some people called Townsend Brown Dr. Brown even though he did not get his doctorate degree...... But what if the character was Townsend Brown....... that is a interesting thought.....someone who wrote it was admired By Townsend Brown. -dcooper

How are you doing with your studies Dylan? I think of you often and would remind you that Dad would be encouraging you to study hard... and he would want you to get your degree eventually even though he never got his Doctorate. Those around him always called him " Doctor Brown" anyway.....

Even the US Navy. <g>.... it will be so much easier for you though.... Dad would stress to you.... with a good education and credentials with you. Its less of an uphill battle that way.... you can think renegade thoughts all you want.... but get your credentials in order too! Linda

On Von Braun..... other than a similar English/German name.....Dad was not really into " rockets" at all. In fact he was once quoted as calling that field " Brute force and awkwardness"!

Von Braun did make statements though that the space technology that was being developed had " help" from " outsiders. I am not sure what he exactly meant by that and I don't think anyone else did at the time either. More things that will eventually " bubble to the surface".

I am having fun with your connection between Dad and " Back to the Future". Sadly the movie came out the same year that Dad died ( in October) so I don't know if he ever saw it. Would have been fun though I think if he had! Linda

I stand corrected , what I meant to say was, I am not telepathic, or I am as telepathic as something that isn't telepathic.

A rock will never be my first choice for that statement again!

How about a brick wall or a door knob? they are not telepathic right?

This is now 2 synchronicity for me today, the Doc Brown and the telepathic Rock, its not like I tried to do this, how strange.

This statement was written by Paul Schatzkin and is quoted at the beginning of the " notebook" postings. It might need a little bit of an explanation

"Back in the 1970s and 1980s a researcher and author named Willam Moore --- best known as the co-author of such folk-lore as "The Roswell Incident" and "The Philadelphia Experiment" (there, I said it...), wrote a couple of articles about Townsend Brown. Moore was also the last journalist to interview and photograph Brown shortly before his death in 1985.

"Somehow, during that period, Moore obtained access to Brown's personal laboratory notebooks, and, presumably, obtained permission to "publish" three volumes of those journals. Photo-copies of those journals have been in circulation ever since." .

You can tell that Paul is being his usual self when he mentions the Philadelphia Experiment and the Roswell Incident... and calls them...." Myths". Alot of people reading that on his Forum took real exception to his attitude.... but that was typical of Paul... When we first started researching Dads life he swore that he was never going to mention " The Philadelphia Experiment"..... thats why he says what he does here " There.... I've said it."

Paul also had a very hard time trying to wrap his head around what the story was telling him and where it was going... he wanted it to be easy... Like his earlier attempt at a biography. He expected things to fall into place the way that his Philo Farnsworth story had. Of course he was not dealing with all of the black holes that appeared in Dads life and I guess they ended up to be too much for him. After his meeting with Mikado anyway.

Lady of Light was kind enough to put this thread out and available when it was apparent that there were those who were delighting in questioning my authenticity. Was I REALLY Townsend Browns daughter? I hope that question has been put to rest....

I do have a couple of comments though.... who else would know that T. Townsend Brown used to sleep next to his recorders.... which he had rigged with alarms so that he would be notified when a " Glitch" came roaring in.... what did that mean to him? Apparently alot. He was in his late seventies... and he used to sleep.... sometimes on the floor... next to the Koolau Sensor. Who else would know that but his daughter? Who else might do the same thing? This is a response that I just put out to " Fruitbat " and Raymond on the cosmic-token. Raymond is concerned that "nothing seems to be happening" and Fruitbat is impatient to see action in a more commercial vein... and I don't blame either of them.... but this was my reaction...

In the sixties my Dad had a conversation with a sailing partner of his. I think that he said much the same thing that you have said here Fruitbat....Basically... we need a breakthrough.... something commercially acceptable....all this space propulsion etc is nice but where is the value to the ordinary person? His companion made the comment.... it moves air. Dad said..... Of course..... so the answer then was " Make it a fan"

Right. Simple? That conversation evolved into the prototype that I remember carrying around to show off the principle..built in 1962...... then the larger ones that looked like a window frames with a venetian blinds in them. It was silent of course so we had to do something to show that it was running... before the red light was installed we simply put a red ribbon in front of it....

But things are not always as simple as they seem with this technology and introducing it to the world as a simple fan was not always the straight path that I thought that it was going to be.... I thought that it would be a done deal. Product Engineering did a very nice article on the fan early in 1967.... we got heaps and heaps of responses from people wanting to take it to the next step......All those responses were dumped on Mr. Odlums big table in April of 1967.....By early summer we were working at GTI... a company controlled by Odlum .... but the technology was something that "upper management" did not understand.( Even Dr. Teller had looked at the thing and declared that he did not understand why it worked)...( as part of the arrangement we were required to build even more prototypes there under GTIs supervision. The President of the firm thought that Dad was a con man ( the renegade scientist with the pretty assistant one of them sniffed dismissively) They thought that we had somehow " pulled the wool over poor old Mr. Odlum to get his support".... and though they could look right at it operating they still did not quite believe it.

Alright I thought... I can build more of these damned things. They hired a " Project Engineer" who was clueless ( forgive me Mike... wherever you are.... but you know thats true! You put your hand through one of the wire grids that I was constructing without even realizing that it was there or what I was doing! It was not an auspicious beginning)

We demonstrated the fan to the GTI stockholders.... repeatedly that summer.....but nothing really seemed to be happening... then in November of 1967 we had a demonstration at RAND there in Santa Monica. Mike and I took all of our new fan prototypes and met General Curtis LeMay and my Dad there... we had the older original big unit on its own stand along with us.

.....I was excited. I mean... if RAND does a report on a commercial unit... it goes forward.... right? All of this work has finally meant something? Right?

The men did not seem at all suprised with the units. In fact none of the engineers even bothered to walk around them..that was the first time we had ever gotten that reaction. The public meetings there at GTI had been filled with people who were simply amazed....where was the wind coming from... they would stare into it... through it... feel the cool air on their faces... there is nothing moving!..

After the demonstration at the RAND building Dad told me to take the units back to GTI... with Mikes help.... and that he would meet me later for dinner. The big unit stayed behind with him.

I never saw it again.

And at dinner Dad told me that the " Project" for " developing the fan" was " shutting down" and he felt that perhaps this was a good time for me to " find a life of my own". To this point I had been actively involved since I left college...( early 1966) in the development of this particular thing and suddenly it was just POOF. ( I had watched Dad construct the first fan model in 1962.... so unofficially had been involved since then.... but the year of 1966 was full time for me...and most of 1967 too.....and suddenly all those expectations were GONE.)

I don't remember what year it was that Dad handed Jim Lee the information on the fan... He actually stayed with Jims operation for awhile and then left for other projects.... Jim eventually took his version of what Dad had handed him to " Sharper Image" and it became what you all will recognize as the " Ionic Breeze".... but that commercial application was quite a time after Dad had died in 1985.... so count the years.

I am very calm about all of that. Maybe because I am not at all interested in trying to " get something to the market"..the idea of applying for patent protection just sort of turns my stomach..... watching the Ionic Breeze commercials was irritation enough for me..They never even bothered to nod recognition in Dads direction... something I think that Jim Lee felt badly about.... but...." Marketing is marketing" he said.

I have become wise enough to realize that there has been something else at work here Fruitbat.... something that takes a stronger position than mere commercial reward. Its not easy to see obviously but it is there.... and its " latch on time" is far different than ours.

Of course there are developments that need to " bubble to the surface" but I am good with simply watching the process unfold.

There are some of you out there who will go through the process and by adding what you have that is unique to you I expect that many of you will make many fortunes several times over. As Dad would say... GO FORTH...

I am not actually interested in all of that or in the problems of " bringing a product to market" I wish all of you the very best and you should all know that I will help each one of you as I can, when I can.....

Why hasn't a breakthrough happened yet? I don't know. It is certainly about TIME. Linda
