Gentech Holdings to make bio-piracy

Genetically modified crops may respond to climate change, but the lobby against the patenting of the technologies used in them is stronger. Especially if the new types of innovations derived from traditional farmers.
Climate resistant properties by the biotech industry are patented by the ages developed by the breeding work of farmers, "says internationally renowned activist Vandana Shiva in New Delhi.

According to Shiva, the genetic businesses "one disaster after another" because they want to exploit the commercial climate. "The biotech industry is itself down as the rescue and governments and the public believe that. But if it is to them, climate-resistant seeds will not come, "says Shiva. "By as much as possible to submit claims on all crops and properties, close the industry future possibilities for adapting to climate change."

Shiva cites four companies as a leader in the game for the 'climate-proof' genes, which can ensure that crops floods, drought, salt water, ultraviolet radiation can pass, to be usurped: the German BASF, Bayer, Syngenta of Switzerland and the U.S. companies Monsanto and Du Pont.

In 2001 succeeded Shiva's Navdanya action is to prevent the American company RiceTec patent was on a variant of the aromatic basmati rice, after it was proved that the variety of RiceTec genetic material developed from species of rice (Indian) farmers.

In 2004 succeeded Navdany together with some other organizations in 2004 to ensure that Monsanto's patent was the Indian wheat variety Nap Hal.

Traditional crops

Monsanto advertising including the slogan "Nine billion people to feed. A climate change. What now? " Subsequently, genetically modified crops as answer. Many developing countries, however, prefer to grow traditional crops beyond harvest seeds stored for next year instead of annually re-engineered seeds to buy large companies.

Navdanya last month published a list of hundreds of climate-resistant crops, kept by farmers in India, where large companies have taken patents.

The list, part of the report Biopiracy or Climate Resistant Crops, was published to Indian policy makers to take the innovations of farmers to be included in the National Action Plan on Climate Change. This plan focuses on biotechnology.

Shiva was pleased that governments, starting from the G77 countries and China, are beginning to see that it is important to climate-friendly technology should be excluded from patenting. This was during the climate talks in Bonn in early June were held.

Developed countries, particularly Japan, Canada, Australia, Switzerland and the U.S., promoting strict intellectual property rights. Last year, the ETC Group in Ottawa (Canada) a report which stated that large biotech companies to take climate change feet to the ground in the seed market.

In Bonn, the President to a committee and advisory panel to establish whether a body is created that pro-actively dealing with patents and intellectual property issues related to both innovation and access to technology "to secure. (IPS)
