UK officials briefed ministers on UFOs
March 22, 2009 - 11:44AM

Britain's defence ministry was so alarmed by reports of a UFO sighting nearly 20 years ago, it took the unusual step of briefing ministers, according to secret files released on Sunday.

Other incidents in the files, released by the National Archives, include a woman who claimed she was approached by an alien with a "Scandinavian-type accent."

The group of seven files, released by Britain's National Archives, were recorded between November 1987 and April 1993 by the Defence Intelligence Staff in the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and include details of around 1,200 different UFO (unidentified flying object) sightings.

The MoD was handed negatives of photographs - showing a large diamond-shaped object hanging in mid-air for around 10 minutes before ascending upwards at high speed - taken on August 4, 1990, by two members of the public.

"Such stories are not normally drawn to the attention of ministers," an official noted in a memo included in the file.

"On this occasion, however, the MoD has been provided with six photographic negatives of an alleged UFO by the Scottish Daily Record and has been asked for comments almost certainly for inclusion in a forthcoming story."

The official added that ministers should tell the media that "no definite conclusions (were) reached regarding (the) large diamond-shaped object."

Among the other files released were details of an anonymous female dog walker who said she met an alien who claimed extraterrestrial life was behind crop circles.

The woman, who telephoned the Royal Air Force to relay her experience, said the incident happened on November 20, 1989, while she was walking her dog on a sports field.

She said she was approached by a man who spoke with a "Scandinavian-type accent" dressed in a brown garment that resembled a flying suit who told her that the purpose of the alien visit was friendly.

The files will be free for the public to access for the next month on UFO files | Newly released files from The National Archives.

MoD briefed ministers over UFO

Photographs taken of a UFO hovering next to an RAF jet over Scotland were treated very seriously by military investigators, newly-released Ministry of Defence files show.

Witnesses saw the mysterious large diamond-shaped object hanging in the air for about 10 minutes before it ascended vertically at high speed.

Military experts concluded the aircraft was a Harrier, but could not identify the UFO despite apparently commissioning detailed line drawings of it.

Fearing there could be significant media interest, the MoD took the unusual step of briefing ministers about the sighting.

The incident also discloses that British military intelligence officers tasked with investigating UFO reports took a close interest in claims the US was developing a top secret spy-plane.

The sighting is included in military UFO documents made available online by the National Archives.

The seven files, produced by the DI55 branch of the Defence Intelligence Staff, relate to the period between November 1987 and April 1993 and contain details of around 1,200 separate UFO sightings.

They demonstrate that British officials were more concerned about advanced new aircraft being developed by the Russians and Americans than little green men.

The files include numerous cuttings from magazines and newspapers relating to rumors that the US military was developing a hypersonic spy-plane known as Aurora.

Attached to one article about Aurora from September 1991 was a note from an MoD official that read: "Attention is really focusing on this now, notwithstanding a recent USAF 'denial briefing'".

Defence chiefs 'ignoring UFOs'

A SHEFFIELD Hallam University lecturer says newly-released government files show the Ministry of Defence is "not in the slightest bit interested in aliens".
David Clarke, a UFO expert and journalism lecturer, said documents released by National Archives reveal military investigators tasked with probing a huge number of possible sightings focused instead on Russian activity.

Dr Clarke said: "They're only interested in the defence implications.

"The question is what are the Russians testing, and could any of these sightings be something of that kind? As soon as they have eliminated that, they're not interested."

The seven files, from between November 1987 and April 1993 and produced by defence intelligence staff, contain details of around 1,200 separate UFO sightings.

But some incidents were treated "very seriously", the documents show.

Among the items disclosed are photographs taken of a UFO next to a RAF jet over Scotland in 1990.

Witnesses saw the mysterious diamond-shaped object hanging in the air for about 10 minutes before it ascended vertically at high speed. Military experts could not identify the UFO - but speculated it could have been a secret new spy-plane being developed by the US.

Fearing there could be significant media interest, the MoD took the unusual step of briefing ministers about the sighting.

There is also an intelligence report quoting an October 1991 sighting in Kazakhstan of a UFO with "a semi-transparent halo and rays 'shooting out' in different directions".

A woman claimed she was approached by an alien with a "Scandinavian-type accent" as she walked her dog.

And people were baffled by an object in the skies of London which turned out to be a brightly-illuminated airship advertising the new Ford Mondeo.
