German farmers will not need to genetically modified maize. Minister of Agriculture Aigner decided Tuesday to ban after social concerns about the impact of crops on the environment and the economy.

Aigner reached that conclusion after a study into the effects of crop from the U.S. supplier of gengewassen Monsanto. The plant, MON 810, is the only genetically modified crop since 1998 within the European Union should be rebuilt.

Earlier this month Germany banned the cultivation of Monsanto’s GM corn, “claiming that MON 810 is dangerous for the environment. But that argument might not stand up in court and Berlin could face fines totalling millions of euros if American multinational Monsanto decides to challenge the prohibition on its seed”, which is exactly what they have decided to do.

“Monsanto has filed a lawsuit against the German government after the EU member state banned planting of its genetically modified MON810 maize last week.” A spokesperson for Monsanto has stated that the ban is ‘arbitrary’.

Monsanto has won numerous court cases in the past when local communities, individuals, and countries have tried to ban Monsanto products. One of Monsanto’s most recent victories was in the United States when a federal court in Ohio ruled that “dairies cannot legally label their milk ‘hormone free,’ ‘rBST-free’ or otherwise” – labels which would have clearly informed consumers about synthetic hormones in dairy products.

It’s a win for Monsanto, the agrichemical giant that prompted the lawsuit, and a win for Eli Lilly, which bought Monsanto’s synthetic recombinant bovine growth hormones (known as rBST or rBGH) business a couple months ago. The use of these hormones is banned throughout most other first world nations. The labeling issue is moot in the 27-nation European Union, along with Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, since they don’t allow the use of synthetic hormones in the first place.”
