Germany prohibits GMO Corn
Wednesday, April 15, 2009

German farmers will not need to genetically modified maize. Minister of Agriculture Aigner decided Tuesday to ban after social concerns about the impact of crops on the environment and the economy.

Aigner reached that conclusion after a study into the effects of crop from the U.S. supplier of gengewassen Monsanto. The plant, MON 810, is the only genetically modified crop since 1998 within the European Union should be rebuilt.

whose larvae have eaten a way through the plant . It was planned that in April 3600 hectares of maize were sown in Germany, but that is the decision by Aigner .

Rules
Germany follows with the prohibition France, Austria and Hungary, which also allow crops which are genetically falsified. European countries may, through a legal clause to escape the European rules for genetic engineering.

A month ago a failed attempt by the European Commission to lift the national ban off. Only the Netherlands, Great Britain, Sweden and Finland voted to force the lifting of a ban.

Opponents fear that the modified plant will sow and oppress other species. Monsanto submitted a report to Aigner which stresses that its plants are safe, offer higher yields and less pesticide, but ultimately lost the battle a number of other critical researchers.

Supporters and critics of genetic engineering in agriculture is usually about one thing: The technology is impressive, whether good or bad.

Today, the Union of Concerned Scientists ranks the connection and claimed that genetic engineering is simply ineffective, at least in increasing crop yields.

UCS's Doug Gurian-Sherman searched the scientific literature for side by side comparison of conventional and genetically modified lines of maize and soya. He was in almost all cases that genetically engineered crops do not produce larger harvests.

The only exception was insect-resistant Bt maize, only produced higher yields when adjacent plots of conventional corn members to the scourge of a worm called the European corn borer. Crop Yield has increased significantly in the last ten years, he says, but almost all of that increase is due to traditional plant breeding or other farming practices.

These results will not surprise most farmers. They plant crops genetically modified to doses of the herbicide glyphosate (commonly known as Roundup) to tolerate, especially since this property is sometimes easier and cheaper to weed Controlling, not because the yield increases. The UCS study is instead aimed at the general public in an attempt to allegations made by the biotechnology industry that GM parry the best solution to global food shortages.

Germany, GM crops, bovine growth hormones, and ‘The World According to Monsanto’
Chycho.com - Analysis and discussion about the world we live in.

Earlier this month Germany banned the cultivation of Monsanto’s GM corn, “claiming that MON 810 is dangerous for the environment. But that argument might not stand up in court and Berlin could face fines totalling millions of euros if American multinational Monsanto decides to challenge the prohibition on its seed”, which is exactly what they have decided to do.

“Monsanto has filed a lawsuit against the German government after the EU member state banned planting of its genetically modified MON810 maize last week.” A spokesperson for Monsanto has stated that the ban is ‘arbitrary’.

* “A clause in EU law does allow member states to impose such a ban, but Monsanto claims they can only do so once a plant has already been approved if new scientific evidence has come to light.”

Monsanto has won numerous court cases in the past when local communities, individuals, and countries have tried to ban Monsanto products. One of Monsanto’s most recent victories was in the United States when a federal court in Ohio ruled that “dairies cannot legally label their milk ‘hormone free,’ ‘rBST-free’ or otherwise” – labels which would have clearly informed consumers about synthetic hormones in dairy products.

* “It’s a blow to truth-in-labeling advocates, a blow to consumers and a blow to organic farmers. It’s a win for Monsanto, the agrichemical giant that prompted the lawsuit, and a win for Eli Lilly, which bought Monsanto’s synthetic recombinant bovine growth hormones (known as rBST or rBGH) business a couple months ago. The use of these hormones is banned throughout most other first world nations. The labeling issue is moot in the 27-nation European Union, along with Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, since they don’t allow the use of synthetic hormones in the first place.”

There are many issues concerning Monsanto products and genetically modified foods such as; ‘Superweeds’ that are plaguing high-tech Monsanto crops in southern US states, declining fruit and vegetable nutrient composition due to the ‘genetic dillution effect’, GM foods causing cancer, and the connection of genetically modified crops to Colony Collapse Disorder.

The above are just some of the reasons why in the United States people are trying to tell Obama not to appoint a former Monsanto lawyer on the White House Food Safety Panel, and why people are learning how to avoid Genetically Modified fruits and vegetables by reading PLU labels – “This number tells you what kind of fruit it is. If the PLU code has five numbers, the first number represents either organic (8) or genetically modified (9).” “A conventionally grown product (grown with chemical assistance) will have a 4 digit PLU code.”
