Iraq’s al-Maliki government has rejected Washington’s offer to return half of Iraq’s Jewish archives stolen by the US occupation forces in 2003. Liwa Samaism, Iraqi Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, in an interview with daily Azzaman early this month, accused the United States of violating international law and its obligations as a former occupying power by holding Iraq’s Jewish archives and other ancient documents.
Iraqi media has blamed the Jewish lobby behind the stalling of the return of the stolen archives and that the Zionist entity was planning to obtain the historic manuscripts from its American colony. Arab League’s deputy secretary General Ahmed ben Helli has confirmed attempts by the Zionist entity to steal ancient Iraqi archives.
“Iraq has been subjected to the biggest theft of its manuscripts and historic treasures and Israel is accomplice to this,” said Helli.
The Jewish archives stolen from Iraq consist of 3,000 documents, 1,700 antiques including old copies of anti-Christ Babylonian Talmud and Torah (OT). Many experts on Judaism argue that Zionist regime is keen on obtaining the archives in order to further distort the history of the Middle East for its own interests.
Edward Peck, former US chief of the mission in Iraq, in an interview with Press TV said: “Iraq says it should stay in Iraq because that is the history. Israel I suppose wants the whole thing and America would probably in this case side with Israel.
Washington, originally, had agreed to return the archives to Baghdad by the end of 2005.
