Today, the Speaker of Iranian Majlis (parliament), Ali Larijani said that though Iran has always supported a negotiated settlement to Syrian crisis – it will boycott Geneva II conference if the Zionist regime is invited to attend the conference in Switzerland.
“If Israel takes part in the Geneva II conference, Iran will never participate in it,” Larijani said in an interview with al-Mayadeen news channel on Saturday.
Larijani stressed that Iran believes in the necessity of the political settlement of the Syrian problem, and said violence and crisis in the Muslim country merely serves the interests of the Zionist regime, the US and other western states.
On June 12, Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, told reporters in Moscow that Iran received a verbal invitation to attend Geneva II conference ten days ago.
Washington and Moscow are the joint sponsors of the said conference which was scheduled to be held in Switzerland in June but is now postponed to next month as Israel and American Jewish lobby groups are against the participation of Iran. The regimes in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon have supported Iran’s participation in Geneva II conference.
Russia has insisted that a peace in the region couldn’t be achieved without the active participation of Iran, which has long become a regional power. Late in May, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, said: “This issue is not related to the Syrians alone, as there are a number of foreign players involved at that crisis as well, and therefore, Iran’s presence at that conference is of key importance for us“.
“In my talks with the US and French foreign ministers John Kerry (with Jewish family roots) and Lauran Fabio (a Jew) aimed at solving the ambiguities about the combination of participating countries at Geneva II International Conference on Syria I gained their approval on need for revising their former decision (on Iran),” Lavrov added.
On May 26, Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Muallem told reporters in Baghdad that his country agrees in principle to attend the US-Russian backed Geneva II conference. Earlier this moth, Syrian MP Walid Al-Zaabi, said: “Iran, as a key player in the regional political scenes and a major state both at regional and international levels, should attend the Geneva II Conference to be held in Switzerland in July“.
Last month, Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Qazanfar Roknabadi claimed that the US and the Zionist regime were the main culprits behind the Syrian crisis.
