An opinion poll conducted by the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, released on Monday, projected Egyptian diplomat Amr Moussa as the frontrunner with 39% backing – followed by former Muslim Brotherhood member Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh (24.5) and former prime minister Ahmed Shafeek (17.2%). The religious divide indicates that while religious Muslim majority will vote for Abul-Fotouh – the secular Muslims and Christians (Copts) will vote for former foreign minister and head of Arab League, Amr Moussa, a secularist.

The military junta (SCAF) prefers Ahmed Shafeek while US-Israel prefer Amr Moussa or any other candidate who doesn’t have Islamic credentials. Muslim Brotherhood’s popular candidate, Al-Shater was disbanned from running the election. MB’s current candidate, Dr. Morsi is not favored by either SCAF or USrael.

Egypt’s first post-revolution presidential poll will be held on May 23. It’s becoming increasingly clear that the race will come down to the above three presidential hopefuls. A second round will probably be held, in which case the favored winner will be USrael choice, Amr Moussa.

To the great dismay of USrael – both leading candidates, Abul Fotouh and Amr Moussa, in a televised debate on Thursday, stated that the Zionist entity is an enemy of Egypt.

“Israel is an enemy which is built on occupation, owns 200 nuclear warheads, doesn’t respect international decisions and attacks religious symbols. The majority of Egyptians are enemies of Israel,” Fotouh said.

Amr Moussa said that he supports the Palestinian cause and is in favor of East Jerusalem being the capital of Palestinian state. He also called the Arab states to improve relations with the Islamic Republic. He pointed out that during his time as foreign minister he had tried to improve relations with Iran, but had been prevented by former US-backed dictator Hosni Mubarak.

Arab English daily alakhbar reported reported on May 10, 2012 that a report prepared by US intelligence agencies for Obama administration – has warned it against the victory of Abul-Fotouh or Muslim Brotherhood candidate Dr. Mohamed Morsi in the coming presidential election.

The report acknowledges that there is widespread public feeling that Egypt has hitherto been prevented from playing its natural role in the Arab and Islamic world, and that it should take a stronger stand against the US and Israel. It sees the spate of bombings of the pipeline supplying Egyptian natural gas to Israel as a manifestation of this, and warns that it might eventually result in the abrogation of Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel.

Accordingly, the report argues that the Muslim Brotherhood should be prevented from winning the presidential elections by all means – including by aggravating rivalries with other Islamist groups, including the Salafis and the so-called ‘Al-Qaeda‘ sympathizers.

The report recommends that the US support the candidacy either of Amr Moussa or Ahmad Shafeek. The diplomatic sources, however, said that the Americans are aware that Shafeek lacks the charisma, popularity and legitimacy needed to stand any chance of winning, and are in practice backing Amr Moussa. They said a team of British intelligence operatives had been formed to covertly support his candidacy.

Personally, I don’t trust Amr Moussa’s anti-Israel or pro-Iran rhetoric considering his past when he used to wine and dine with western puppets in the Arab League.
